The Cowboys kept six safeties because two of them, Danny McCray and Eric Frampton, are so good at special teams, coach Jason Garrett ssaid.
Never mind that both are injured right now, and that McCray took a pay cut to stay on the roster. The Cowboys wanted them both, Garrett said.
“Danny McCray has been as good a special teams player as we've had. He's been our special teams captain, he’s one of those guys where you say he's playing safety, but his most significant role is as a teams guy,” Garrett said. “You can really view Frampton the same way.”
The other safeties are the starters, Barry Church and Will Allen, and the backups, rookies J.J. Wilcox and Jeff Heath. With Church and Allen, there was no doubt about their spots. Wilcox, as a third-round pick who made an impact in camp, was a sure thing, too. But Heath was a surprise, Garrett said.
“In Heath's case, he really came in from outside of the radar and said, 'Hey, I'm a good football player, and you’ve just got to keep me,’ “ Garrett said. “He did that in practice, and he did that in the preseason, and that's good for your team when that happens.”
