Stephen Jones said the Cowboys are open to signing Anthony Spencer, but first, he and the team have to be convinced he’s healthy.
“We got our fingers cross, and he does, too, that his injury comes along in the proper way,” Jones said Wednesday at the Senior Bowl.
The Cowboys valued Spencer so much, they put the franchise tag on him each of the past two years. But last year, knee surgery in the first week of training camp knocked him out until the second game of the year. And after playing in that game, Spencer had a second knee surgery that ended his season.
Spencer remains Cowboys property until the start of the new league year in March, when he becomes an unrestricted free agent.
“Absolutely,” Jones said, asked if the Cowboys are open to a return by Spencer. “Anthony’s been an unbelievable player for us, and very unfortunate what happened to him last year. But very productive. Obviously a guy we think a lot of; we franchised him last year. He’s the type of player you want on your team.”
