Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said the four turnovers in the first half against the Arizona Cardinals were the result of extra effort, and he credited the defense for allowing only nine points.
“We’ve done a good job in training camp really trying to get our defense to work on getting the ball. Obviously we going to have to go back to the drawing board on protecting the ball,” he said in a halftime interview on the Cowboys television broadcast. “You’ve got to protect the ball in these games. If you lose the turnover battle in the regular season, you usually lose.”
Jones said the Cowboys’ own emphasis on creating turnovers in practice should be helping the offense.
“Now obviously, that’s not showing up today,” he said. “I’m convinced these are big-effort plays. People are working hard to get some extra yards. Kyle’s having a tough day today. But not a doubt in my mind we’ll go back to the drawing board, we’ll work on this, and we’ll do better.”
Jones said he liked the way Terrance Williams came back from the overthrow on the first pass to him.
“That would have been a great start to his career, because I think he had him – corner slipped a little bit, and I think Terrance was going to have a score there,” Jones said. “After that, I think he kept battling. He made some catches. Certainly he has a bright future for the Cowboys. Great body type. He’s going to be a big physical receiver, and I think he will stretch the field for us. He obviously made a few catches. Got his feet wet. … I think it’s all in front of Terrance.”
