Tony Romo couldn’t throw in the Cowboys’ organized team activities, but he did coach.
Dallas ended its OTAs with the second annual Dallas Cowboys U high school football camp for 160 underserved student-athletes from the area Thursday.

Romo, whom owner Jerry Jones has said will have a bigger hand in the offensive game-planning this season, saw his team win the 7-on-7 championship. Miles Austin’s team lost to Romo’s team in the championship game.

Romo, who declined comment, was coaching both the offense and the defense in the championship game.

Cornerback Brandon Carr, Defensive tackle Jay Ratliff, tight end Jason Witten, linebacker Sean Lee, defensive end DeMarcus Ware and offensive tackle Doug Free also captained teams. The remaining Cowboys players served as assistant coaches.

“We get to come out here and coach,” Lee said. “The best part about it is when they respond. I saw our team get better and better every game and then really respond to coaching. They were selling out. You saw kids diving for balls. You saw kids trying to make plays.”

Witten, whose team won the title last year, had hoped for a repeat. His team went 0-3.

“I’m devastated,” Witten said. “I had a title to defend.”
