The Cowboys begin organized team activities next week, and they are hoping Tony Romo’s back is well enough to allow him to participate in some of the team drills. The quarterback likely won’t do much in individual drills.
But this week is important in Romo’s rehab from the herniated disk surgery he had in December.
“We’ll see how he does this week and hopefully he can do something [at the OTAs],” Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said Sunday night. “He’s done a little bit of stuff, and then he’s kind of backed off, and then done a little bit more and backed off. So we’ve just got to kind of evaluate how his workouts go this week. Obviously, we’d love to get him out there for everything, but we’re going to be smart, too. We recognize it’s the third week of May, and what we’re trying to do is get him ready to play in the regular season. So I think you want to be aggressive with it, but you also want to be smart with it.
"It also affords the other quarterbacks to play and get to know the system. Being in a football setting, where they’re breaking the huddle and going against the huddle, that’s different than what we’re doing right now, so that’ll help them as well."
With Kyle Orton staying away from the team's voluntary workouts, Brandon Weeden, Caleb Hanie and Dustin Vaughn are getting most of the snaps. Weeden and Hanie were signed as free agents earlier this off-season, and Vaughn as an undrafted free agent last week.
Romo hasn't done a lot of throwing since his second back surgery in eight months, but the Cowboys insist his rehab is on schedule.
"It’s probably day by day, and then it’s week by week," Garrett said. "You have a big plan, and you kind of see how you’re doing along that planning, and you make the adjustments accordingly. We’ll be smart with him, but he’s champing at the bit to get back, but we’ve just got to make sure we do the right things."
