For all of Tony Romo's yards and all his touchdowns, his last pass -- his lone interception -- is all anyone will talk about today. The term "Romo-esque" was thrown out the moment Romo's pass was picked by Broncos linebacker Danny Trevathan.
The 51-48 loss defined Romo's career -- great numbers for naught.
"They will until he wins the Super Bowl," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said of that criticism. "And then when they do that, the guy standing over on the other sideline or up in the box, John Elway, had those things said about him his entire career or things like that said his entire career. He was a great player and we all know that, and he ultimately got his Super Bowls, and they don’t say that about him anymore. I’m not trying to be trite. The only way we’ll ever have his recognition when you talk about that position, when you talk about a player at that position, that gives you the best chance to win big, they’re not many better than them, and he has always been the last several years our best chance to win big. And he showed it today. He played games like he played today. He did have the one turnover, but those games like he had today can overcome the one turnover if we don’t do it right at the end of the ball game."
Romo completed 25 of 36 passes for 506 yards, five touchdowns, an interception and a 140.0 passer rating.
His 506 yards broke the team record of 460 yards that Don Meredith had in 1963 against San Francisco. Romo topped his own record of 441 yards, which came last season against Washington.
It was the 11th most for an NFL quarterback in the Super Bowl era.
"It’s just about winning and losing," Romo said. "I think as a quarterback you know that. You leave everything on the field to try and win these football games. It’s disappointing when you don’t. We had a chance today against as good a football team as there is. We had a chance, and that’s what you want."
