Rookie cornerback B.W. Webb said he was impressed by the way fellow rookie J.J. Wilcox played in his first game back since the death of his mother.
“That’s not an easy thing to do when you lose a parent,” Webb said. “It just showed that he had a lot of mental toughness.”
Wilcox’s mother died two weeks ago. Wilcox, one of the stars of the first half of training camp, was away from the team for 10 days, missing one preseason game. He returned to practice last week and got in three days of work before Saturday’s game against the Bengals.
“He hopped right into the swing of things,” Webb said. “It was like he wasn’t gone at all. Didn’t mess up pretty much anything. He came back ready to ball.”
Webb and Wilcox became close during the Senior Bowl. Webb said he is supporting his friend at every turn.
“I stayed on him a little bit, just letting him know I’m still here for him if he needs anything,” Webb said. “He did a good job. He did a good job bouncing back.”
