Rookie J.J. Wilcox said his late hit on Santana Moss in the third quarter, keeping a scoring drive alive for Washington, was an aggressive play, but a foolish play.
“I thought he was still staying up,” Wilcox said. “I don’t want to be the one to let him get up and score. You know, you live and you learn. I’m a rookie. I live and learn. I learned form it, and I understand now there’s different rules. When players are close to the ground, they’re going to call it. Instead of running and hitting them, put your hands on them. You know, I’ll learn from it. It was an aggressive play. It was a foolish play. I take the blame from it. I’ll learn from it a lot.”
Wilcox said he was glad for the reaction from teammates and coaches.
“I think they did a great job of picking me up,” he said. “I’m hard on myself as it is. I’m an emotional player and a hard-effort player. They did a great job of picking me up and just pulling me to the side and letting me know, hey, live on to the next play.”
Wilcox said he realizes he could have been chewed out for the play.
“They could have. It’s a win or lose situation,” he said. “I took the blame for it. If I went out there and said,, ‘Hey, I thought he was still up, it’s not my fault, it’s the referee’s fault,’ you know, it could have turned out a different way. But I took the blame for it, manned up for it. Coach Garrett did a great job of helping keep me in the game.”
