Rookie receiver Terrance Williams said Tony Romo checked to a screen for him on a third down in the red zone, and that it was close to working.

“It was just a matter of if the safety wouldn’t have been down, it would have been better,” Williams said.

Instead, the Cowboys took a field goal.

The Cowboys took criticism for not going to Dez Bryant in the end zone on the series, but Williams said Romo did not see what he wanted.

“He got a look, he checked to it,” Williams said. “We had a play we could call before that, but he didn’t see the right look, so he checked to something else.”

Coach Jason Garrett said the ball does not always have to go into the end zone for an effective scoring play.

“Run-and-catch plays down in the tight red zone, where everybody’s in the end zone, sometimes can be good plays,” he said. “I don’t know if you saw yesterday, Kansas City ran one to Dwayne Bowe. He caught it at about the 6-yard line and ran it in the end zone.”

Garrett said teams must avoid calling plays with criticism in mind.

“The thing you’ve got to be careful of when you’re down there is, when they’re defending the end zone, everyone’s standing in the end zone, just say, ‘Hey, I have to physically throw the ball into the end zone or there’s going to be a big reaction about the play call.’ ” Garrett said. “That’s not what you want to do. You want to give yourself the best chance.”
