Tight end Jason Witten admits it is not pleasant duty to rewatch the Week 17 tape from last year.
The Commanders swamped the Cowboys offense in a 28-18 victory, collecting two sacks and three interceptions with a pressure package that went unsolved the whole game.
“It felt like we were on our heels the entire game, turning the ball over, doing all of those things you hope not to do in a big game like that,” Witten said. “It’s a tough tape to go back and watch and learn. I’m sure we’ll expect Jim Haslett to do a lot of the same stuff. Hopefully, we’ve got some better answers this year.”
Witten said the Commanders’ pressure in that game was nothing brand new – it was just that the Cowboys didn’t block it up.
“It’s a lot of the similar blitzes you see from the 3-4 package,” he said. “He was just able to hit on them more than other teams had, and had success. I don’t think it was anything more than we didn’t execute. I mean, it wasn’t anything exotic we hadn’t seen before. They did a good job of hiding it and disguising it, and we didn’t do enough of a good job of executing.”
The Commanders also beat the Cowboys at AT&T Stadium last year. But they have not won three games in a row in the series since 1988, when a four-game run ended.
