Stanback vs. Brown, Watkins, Gibbons, etc.

The belief that Isaiah Stanback's roster status is tied completely to the play of Kevin Ogletree is off base. Both are fighting for a roster spot with the other players on the bubble, not exclusively the receiver position.

Whether both make the roster depends on whether they prove more valuable than:

CB Courtney Brown
S Patrick Watkins
DE Marcus Dixon
OL Ryan Gibbons
TE Rodney Hannah

If none of the above players (and maybe a few others, like Justin Rogers) proves more valuable, then both receivers make the roster. So it's not the competition between Stanback and Ogletree many seem to want to make it out to be.

I take Stanback over every one of those.

There's no way we keep four TEs, so Hannah is off the list. Back to the PS for him. Gibbons doesn't have a chance either.

The only way I could see us keeping four TEs is if we don't keep a fullback ... and I don't think that's going to happen.

I agree on Gibbons, too. I don't think Dallas wants to keep a 10th lineman this year, since their contributions on special teams are limited.

I think Watkins has the best shot because of special teams, but I'd much prefer Stanback if that's the case. Stanback played better on special teams Friday than Watkins.

If Marcus Dixon comes back and looks like the player Dallas promoted him to be, then he could force us to keep a fifth DE.

Yeah, I don't see much reason to keep Watkins around anymore. Let one of the young safeties get his S/T reps.

It's a shame Brown has been so terrible in training camp and preseason. Word was he looked really good in mini-camps.

I would take Dixon and Gibbons from that list over Stanback. Stanback is just not a reliable player week to week. There's not much proven depth behind the starters on the DL with the exception of Bowen, so we need Dixon and the coaches like him. Gibbons I would keep because he can play multiple positions on the OL. I wouldn't be surprised if we cut Proctor or Holland in favor of Gibbons.

I thought it was cruel of that guy to play taps for Stanback's career.

Dixon didn't do much the first preseason game and was absent because of injury for the second. If he doesn't show, I think Dallas will take the chance that it can get him to the practice squad.

As far as Gibbons goes, it will just surprise me if we keep 10 linemen again. I don't think he replaces Holland because of experience and Proctor seems to be doing well enough at center to be kept, while we haven't seen much of Gibbons there. Gibbons could force us to keep 10 OL if he plays really well in the last two games, but I think we'll attempt to put him back on the PS for when we lose Proctor and Holland next year.

Can Stanback run the Wildcat... he cant play WR! Miles has the KR job on lock.. since it takes Dallas 4+ years to develop a WR, cut your losses, start grooming Ogeltree so he can be ready in 2013.

Patrick Watkins is a good special teams player, but he's completely undisciplined at the same time.

He had the overwhelming majority of special teams penalties last season despite playing in only half of the games due to injury.

Special teams penalties are a sign of 100% pure, unadulterated stupidity. There is no excuse for a special teams penalty.

I agree, and I hope we do not keep him because of the tackles he contributes. He more than makes up for that in penalties and not being worth a lick at his position.
