This has been one weird college football season so far...
Joining in the weirdness are my beloved UTEP Miners; last weekend, they beat SMU 48-45 in overtime; last night, they beat Tulsa 48-47 on a TD pass with like 30 seconds to go... in both games, there was NO defense played, by either team; the two teams combined for 1218 yards last night, (648 for Tulsa, 570 for UTEP), last weekend it was 1074 combined yards (UTEP 558, SMU 516)...
How in God's name could a team gain 648 yards in regulation and LOSE??
The week before that, UTEP put up 449 yards in a 52-12 rout of Texas Southern... they're 4-2 right now, having lost a heartbreaker to New Mexico State, 29-24, and giving a pretty fair Texas Tech team a good ballgame up at Tech, losing 45-31...
It's hard to believe any team could be 4-2 when they're allowing an average of 30.7 points per game, and almost 490 yards a game, but the Miners have done exactly that... it's even harder for me to believe that they might actually wind up in a bowl game this year, with that defense... the star for the Miners has been RB Marcus Thomas, who came out of high school a highly regarded prospect (he went to UAB first, then transferred) but never really did jack until this year... but this season, he's averaging 5.2 yards per carry and 121 yards a game rushing, with 11 TDs... Thomas may be playing his way into getting drafted... he's 6-1, 215 pounds, and runs in the 4.4-4.45 second range...
Another very intriguing player is Lorne Sam, a QB/WR who played 2 seasons at Florida State (strictly as a WR) before transferring to UTEP... I haven't gotten to see any Miners games yet, but his stats are quite intriguing:
36 rushes for 260 yards, with 3 TDs... he averages 6.7 yards per carry... it appears that some of these come on runs from the QB position, but some of them may be coming from the WR position as well, as he also has 19 receptions for 320 yards (16.8 average), with 1 more TD... and he's completed 8 of 13 passes for 68 yards, 1 TD and 2 ints... I have a hunch this kid has some speed, and I also have a hunch he'll get an invitation to some team's training camp next summer...
The only defensive "star" is FS Quintin Demps, younger brother of Will Demps, who was a highly regarded prospect coming into this season... he has 3 more ints this season thus far (to go with the 7 he had last year), returning one 100 yards for a TD... beyond that, he has 43 tackles in the first 6 games, 3 passes broken up, 6 passes defensed, 2 fumble recoveries and a blocked kick... he's also averaging 25.3 yards on 11 kickoff returns, with a long of 43 yards, and has averaged 12.2 yards on 5 punt returns... as feeble as the Miners' defense is, Demps is still likely to wind up a first day draft pick at safety... it would seem he'll also be a dynamic special teamer at the next level, too... for the record, Demps is 6-1, 205 pounds, and reportedly runs in the 4.45 second range...
Last and probably least is kicker Jose Martinez... a junior, Martinez is 4 for 5 in field goals, with a long of 51... his only miss came from 53 yards... he's made all 27 of his PATs... he has kicked off 36 times, and 13 have gone for touchbacks... opponents are only averaging 19.1 yards per kickoff return... he might earn himself a draftable grade next year, if he keeps this up... the kid's 5-10, 200 pounds...
And since I'm talking about the Miners, I just took a look at their basketball roster for the coming season, and for a change they're gonna be right big (Don Haskins was famous for winning with a bunch of 6-5, 6-6 swing men, I only recall him ever having two 7 footers)... they've got a 6-11, 285 pound freshman coming in, a 6-10, 240 pound freshman, to go with rugged Victor Ramalho, a 6-9, 250 pound senior... I went there way back in the early 70s, and I can't ever remember them having that kind of size...
Now, I can only hope that one or both of those freshmen is actually GOOD... LOL...
