It's just the music and them putting the jokes upfront that is turning some people off.

That trailer clearly shows a lot of dramatic clips, it just has a stupid Beastie Boys song playing over it. But Simon Pegg helped write the script, he's been quite vocal about how little risks blockbusters take. Sadly, he's not in charge of the marketing team.

I'll gladly watch both, hope that doesn't offend you.

I will say, this first trailer for Star Trek isn't all that great, but I get it.

I love both of them, but I agree with CashMan. Star Trek is definitely better developed and has a ton more content. IMO, TNG and Voyager are class one series. Enterprise is good and if you can get past all the Soap Opera (hey, some people like that) even DS9 are great.

The original series is good too, but the others are definitely better. The movies are entertaining as well. I really like the reboot movies too.

The Star Wars movies are good. (all of them) The Star Wars Clone Wars cartoon is a great series too.

Better developed because it has MORE CONTENT. I disagree simply because quality over quantity. Star Wars = quality. Winner!

Star Trek. I think original was better. Everything after was same. I do continue to love 7 of 9 though. Borg is cool.

I didn't realize JJ did both of the last two Star Trek.
Then this Star Wars. Seems bit much. Conflict?

I imagine a more serious trailer will come about next time.

I'm not sure what that is, but it's not Star Trek.

In my opinion, the people running things with the franchise either don't understand it, or don't care.

And I think they'll learn a painful lesson here, much like others who wanted to take a proven concept in their own direction have.

The reboot has been extremely successful.

That's budget, opening, domestic gross and foreign gross.

But that's also not this movie, is it?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a staunch advocate of Star Trek being a certain way and I enjoyed both of the past two reboots.

But for as much criticism and venom JJ Abrams got for his version, I think this new one will be getting that much and a whole lot more.

The failings of the Star Trek films before the Abrams' versions is what caused this new take.

As I mentioned in another thread, Star Trek lost the appeal to the mainstream. You're not catching a large audience by having a film with a crew trying to save some whales. It's just not going to work in this Superhero explosion age.

Outside of the strange editing and bad music, does this really look any different than the Abrams movies?

I think it was more JJ Abrams deciding to direct Star Wars instead.

If it won't work, don't do it. Do something else that will work. But have the guts and conviction to make something new and not piggy-back off of the names and characters of Star Trek.

This has all of the trappings of the epic failure of Josh Trank's Fantastic Four. They wanted to have it both ways too, and got neither.
