I realize we are not in cap hell, or close to cap hell. We have what is in essence a fully stocked team, no huge gaping holes, a franchise QB, and not having to restructure contracts to either sign anyone, or to get under the cap. We are in healthy cap shape.
On the other hand, we are going to have to effectively use up a chunk of our remaining cap space to sign our rfa's and our draft choices. We could probably either resign Hamlin, or Flozell, but not both without compromising the cap for the future.
I think it is more important than ever for us to do a great job drafting players, as we are not going to be able to keep every player we want from now on without damaging the cap space a little each time.
Flozell Adams is a great example of a critical decision..... we should not sign him to a long term deal. It is just not prudent to do so. Even though it would hurt to franchise him, it is more prudent to do so than to sign him to a cap friendly deal now and eat his prorated signing bonus when we lose him a year or two down the road. With a franchised player there is NO DEAD MONEY.
