Thankfully, mercifully, the painful 2020 wait for Cowboys football has come to an end. As atrocious as 2020 has been to well most everyone, the one group who can see some real positives are Dallas Cowboys fans.
Ding dong the witch is dead. Poor Jason Garrett was finally ran out of town back to his beloved New Jersey. And in comes a Super Bowl winner with bones as a QB and West Coast Offense guru. That's the most jazzed up Coaching hire since Parcells to be sure. Revamped defense under Mike Nolan and re-hashed Kellen Moore offense with MM whispering in his ear? Yessir! May I have another?
An off-season that didn't start very well with losses of Byron Jones and others really bounced back quite well and was capped by the inexplicable fall of CeeDee Lamb. Dallas will be a top 10 team in talent if not in the win column. Notable concerns at Safety and Right Tackle early but this team is really talented to be sure. But they've been talented before with little to show at the final gun.
Dallas faces the Rams week 1 and these two teams have sort of been going opposite directions since the Rams bullied Dallas in every aspect of the game back in 2018. LAR has lost a lot of talent and the league has learned the weaknesses of Goff in this McVay offense. DAL has gotten better and definitely bigger along the DL. But they've also flipped the weapons advantage hugely in favor of Dallas. At one point LAR had arguably the best WR corps in football. That title now resides in North Texas.
Week 1s have been hard to predict for a while now as coaches have sided with player health over extended playing time in pre-season. This year will be truly a new adventure with zero pre-season and very little live action of any sort. So anyone betting week 1 has to question their sanity. All that said if tackling is an issue as is expected you gotta love that Dallas has guys that are so hard to tackle in Dak, Amari, CeeDee and Zeke getting much of the workload. Also gotta love having a coach who plays the angles and plans for this stuff. No treating it like just another day because it isn't. Every day is unique you process oriented dorks. --sorry had to get that out.
Best case for week 1 is the "road" win in (second home) crowd-less LA but even more importantly no serious week 1 injuries. The lack of contact up til now to the full speed NFL of week 1 is scary. Whatever spirits move you, ask them to protect this team. Health will likely be the key to how this season unfolds in Dallas and elsewhere. But you'll take going in with only one major loss in Gerald McCoy and one short-term loss in La'el Collins. Let's hope we come out much the same.
Lots of talk about this new offense and the bevy of weapons but IMHO it still comes down to how will teams defend Dallas? If you want to keep focusing on Zeke umm OK. Good Luck stopping Gallup outside, CeeDee all over and Cooper any play without help. Want to fly around and play fast guys to tighten lanes? My guess is this DAL OL and Zeke will be glad to take on the challenge of just beating you up. GB was a WCO but never truly finesse.
Defensively is where I just have no idea what to really expect. How to they deploy the CBs and Safeties and how do they perform? Will Jaylon and LVE be as healthy and as good as they were in 2018? I think this offense scores 30+. I just don't know if it will be enough week 1.
