We're 1-4, but hope is not lost.
These are the changes I would make going into the rest of the season.
- Pick up Bobby Carpenter.
- Trade Marion Barber. Open up the play calling, and change the dynamic in our rushing attack. He did well on 3rd and short, but I don't see Felix or Tashard not getting those same first downs. Not to mention getting another draft pick next year. I think we need to start stockpiling draft picks, not to the extent that the Patriots do it, but in that direction.
- Trade for Logan Mankins. Instantly improves our offensive line. Replaces Kosier until Kosier is healthy enough to return, then replaces Leonard Davis. We don't resign Kosier in the offseason, and/or we release Leonard Davis.
- Reduce Jason Witten's snaps. He isn't the same player he was before. Maybe you need to let him recover, I'm not sure. But I give him about 33%-50% of the snaps that he is actually getting right now. Give around 15% to Martellus, and give up to 35% to Dez Bryant. I would probably trade Jason Witten this offseason if I could get a 1st round draft pick for him, and just go with Bennett and Phillips. Yeah it breaks my heart to even think it, but I probably would trade him. This offense needs to get faster, and commit less penalties. Witten is the slowest skills player we have, and he also commits the most penalties. You trade him if you can get a 1st, and use that pick on an offensive linemen. Other than WR, I don't see the point in being so "deep". We're not spreading the wealth very well, and its evident.
- Increase Dez Bryant's snaps. He is a play maker going to waste. Throw the ball to him 8-10 times per game.
- Put more emphasis on getting the ball to wide receivers instead of running backs and tight ends. These guys are the ones who are going to get us points.
- I would say be more aggressive getting to the quarterback, but I actually liked what I saw against Favre, we hit him every time he was throwing. I think the defense will come around, and bringing in Carpenter will help Brooking more than anything.
- Obviously do more to avoid penalties, this goes without saying.
- I don't know what you can do about special teams I don't know if you fire Coach D or you just hope that these young guys improve. Adding Bobby Carpenter probably actually helps our special teams.
- Maybe release Jason Williams and/or Leon Williams and bring back Pat Watkins.
