DA NANG, Vietnam — Navy ensign Roger Staubach sat behind his desk in a tiny office located in a dull, grey warehouse.

The setting was far from being impressive for the Navy quarterback whose name, two years ago, was a household word in millions of American homes. But Staubach prefers it that way.

"This story you write about me won't go back to the States? It's just for Stars & Stripes, right?" he asked.

The soft-spoken, 24-year-old former All-America and Heisman Trophy winner has been in Vietnam for almost two months.

Wow, stars and stripes newspaper, lol

I remember back in 80s, onboard aircraft carrier, picking up Stars and Stripes every morning on the way to breakfast and first page I would look at is the back page, which is sports section to keep up with sports scores even though it was little behind (a day or two), back then, Stars and Stripes was only means to follow sports on aircraft carriers.

You know I had forgotten myself and I posted it here. I'm not certain I remembered reading it in the USMC but I do in the Army.

I work at the odd shaped building (at least most days that I'm not furloughed!). The Stripes is still around and still available! Great read sometimes, though can be slanted.
