Should have beat Carolina to the punch and done a proper all in move on Rasheed Walker from GB for an extremely reasonable 10 mil one year deal like Carolina did. Could have moved him to the right side and replaced Steele or moved Guyton to the right side if you liked Walker at left.

Taylor Decker is the other FA tackle that still even makes sense now.
IF you would have gotten either or both of those options you would have given yourself a strong chance at passblocking improvement and good enough performance to sustain an actual playoff type run.

Guyton and Steele are scrubs and are not gonna hold up as passblockers for a full 17 games.

Steele is pretty much cooked
Guyton still might make it
but the lack of actual work on that position during the offseason will come back to haunt us

I don't think people realize how terrible OT play is around the league. Steele is only a replacement-level player but he's dependable, which is more than you can say about a lot of tackles in the league. There's probably only ~15 "good" RTs. I think it was really stupid to extend him, but anyone you replace him with is going to be just as flawed.

I think the biggest issue with Steele is that when he gets beat it is UGLY.

Constantly playing from behind also really exposes OL in general, especially if they aren't strong pass blockers.

not sure if Ferg has declined as much as people say he has...a bit over exagerated IMHO. he did have injury in 2024, but was inline for similar numbers to 2023.
last year he had his highest catch total but he dropped in Y/R. I think that's partially because of Pickens arrival, new offensive scheme and him having to stay and help out with Steele in pass blocking, given we had 625 pass attempts given how many games we fell behind and had to play catch. he also played role of being a dump off relief valve like Johntson use to be. effectively like a long hand off.

but my comment initially was regarding Steele. He sucks any more. he got an extension and got injured and never been the same. he just has no mobility and is a huge huge liability that requires backs and TEs to help him out. you just can not leave him on an island.

As a starter yes, I was addressing the comment about his salary if he became our backup. You don't want your swing tackle to be the 13th highest paid RT.
 
Can we just clarify the timeline?
  • He tore his ACL and MCL in December 2022.
  • He signed a 5-year, $86m deal in September 2023.

How many OTs can you leave on an island?

This is what I'm talking about when people don't seem to understand what OT play is like around the league. Every team is either chipping or leaving an RB in on every snap lol.

That might be the case but in his short time playing the position he played at a high level. But hopefully Steele gets it together and it’s a non issue.

I do not give a crap about OT play around the league
As regards the money, it is what it is
what I care about is that we are weak right now at BOTH tackle spots and we COULD have done something about Steele and chose not to
You can protect one weak tackle but protecting two is going to do you in when it matters
another reason we were weak in the Red Zone

You must be slow or something. He has been asked to help Steele often, before releasing down the field, which affects his routes.

No Tyler Smith did NOT play at a high level
he was somewhat above league average at LT

The word "weak" only matters in context. So yes, you do care about OT play around the league.
 
I hope they let him play in the preseason games so they can see that he gets beaten by 2nd and 3rd stringers as well. Surely there are othe options out there better than this guy. Do it now before he gets someone hurt!!!!
