because the Rooney's have long been involved with gambling, and gambling in the early part of the century always had mob ties. art Rooney funded the team with winnings from gambling from 1933 to 1941. you will never find anything about them being connected that is concrete but you would have to stretch far to convince most people of the possibilityMuhast;3809414 said:I hear fans say it all the time, but I google searched Rooney/ and the steelers and can't find anything on it.
Whats the deal with it?

Don't get me wrong, the officiating was terrible. However, that year in particular the officiating was horrendous. And you have to remember that in the Steelers v Colts game preceeding it, they had one of the worst calls I've ever seen and it was *against* the Steelers when Polamalu intercepted a pass and fumbled the ball and picked it up again. They originally called it a pick (with a fumble and recovery) and then it got reviewed and they reversed the call, saying it was an incomplete pass.
In particular 2005 was an awful year of officiating. I remember griping over every single Cowboys game how bad the officiating was. People thought I was nuts and I told them they will get to see it rear its ugly head in the postseason...which it did.
Still though...it's a Cowboys forum. We're going to have more fans that hate the Steelers and don't like the way they run their organization. When we were winning Super Bowls and they were stuck with Neil O'Donnell...think Steelers fans were giving Dallas credit for the way the Cowboys ran their superior organization?
Hell no.
Relishing in the fact that the Steelers run their organization better (they also play in a much, much weaker division) just doesn't make much sense to me.

But that phantom hold on the pass down to the Steelers 1 for the go-ahead fourth quarter td? And then the weird low-block call on Hasslebeck? On top of the first quarter TD nullified by a questionable PI call? Pffttt.
I'm not even going to mention the block in the back on Harrison's runback against the Cardinals. Yes I am. It sucked.
As far as the Steeler organization goes, though, I respect how they run things and I'm glad we've got some real competition in this league over the long haul. I hope most Cowboy fans feel the same way. They're one of the handful of organizations that makes the league great.

Of course, there's still a game to be played. The almighty Patriots were supposedly poised to win another Lombardi and got beat in their own backyard. The Falcons were supposedly on pace to make the Super Bowl and got trounced in their back yard.
As far as the mob goes, they were big in Pittsburgh up until the early 80's. Had their hands in a lot of places in the city of Pittsburgh. I don't think the Rooney's did anything unlawful, but there were probably some loose ties to the mob at one point.
