Colbert denies Rooney II role change

2/16/2012 7:33:59 AM

Lost in other news that Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert talked about in an interview Monday was his take on the perceived new role of team president Art Rooney II according to Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Many have called Rooney meddlesome after he did not renew the contract of offensive coordinator Bruce Arians, apparently against at least the initial wishes of coach Mike Tomlin.

Colbert was asked pointedly if Rooney has taken a more activist role in football decisions recently.

"Art Rooney obviously is the owner of the team and the president of the team," Colbert said. "Of course he's going to be in the loop on every decision as any chief operating officer would be of any corporation. I think to say he is meddlesome or dictating every decision I think is very inaccurate.

"A lot of decisions are made around here with a collective effort and, in our end, when we're talking about players, it's a collective effort between myself, coach Tomlin and Art, and that's the way we do business. It hasn't changed a bit since I've been here in 12 years. Of course, Mr. Rooney went from president to chairman, but the philosophy and operating procedures have not changed one bit."

Hey, what's that sound? It sounds like vindication.

Yeah, but only in Dallas would Jerry Jones vacate the GM title, hire someone just to give him that title and assign him the same duties that Tom Ciskowski already has, AND stay out of the loop even though he IS the head of the corporation.

That's impossible, only the cowboys have an owner that gets involved in day to day operation of the team, every other team has the coach and gm that make the football decisions...what a joke:laugh2:

Ouch!!!!

But, but..... Pittsburg is the model franchise. I sure wish Jerry ran things like them. Or, I wish Rooney was the owner of the Cowboys........

The silence is deafening.

When Rooney wants his QB pulled he is probably smart enough to pick up the phone and call down, rather running up to his coach during the game and telling him and crushing his credibility in the process.

Perception vs Reality. In the end, all Owners exert control. The Roony's are no different. How one is perceived vs how one actual behaves is only fodder for the media and misguided fans. To the people that are in the know, perception matters little.

A wise man once wrote, "I am exactly who I am, I'm just not sure that I am what people perceive me to be".

How does this excuse Jerry being a crappy GM though?

Regardless of who is calling the shots in Pittsburgh, their "collective effort" has led to three Superbowl appearances and two championships in the last six years.

Our "collective" effort has led to 16 years of mediocrity.

Not that it really matters because it just means that Rooney > Jerry.

The only thing that this affects is the silly narrative of Jerry being a meddlesome owner and guys like Kraft and Rooney not.

If we had had Dick Lebeau, who could legitimately go into the hall of fame as player and as coach, the Cowboys would have been doing much better and the Steelers less so.

But, as mentioned, the point is more that this 'style' of management is not nearly as unique as complainers say....

:laugh2: at people defending the Al Davis clone running the Cowboys.

What's Colbert going to say otherwise? "No, I told him to keep his nose out of it?" Sort of like expecting Jason Garrett to give an honest answer about Jerry Jones.

It cracks me up that the same mentality guys still don't get it.

That's all it takes? Just Dick LeBeau and we'd be as good as Pittsburgh has been?

hos..IMO titles really mean nothing...if JJ did hire a "G.M." to appease some people...we still know who is still going to make the ultimate decision

Say it louder. I honestly don't think the blind in here heard you and they need to.

I didn't know we had so many Steelers fans wearing silver and blue around here.

It's really bordering on pathetic.

I guess the lunatic himself lies to us every offseason when he tells us about his team's "unique structure".

Oh, I do wish Rooney owned the Cowboys. I'd trade our owner in for any other in the league. But you must take his son with him.

Right. But when you can't admit the obvious because it's too painful as a fan, you're left to make these ridiculous reaches to somehow justify continuity in the front office over 17 years of losing.

That's all this is. We're stuck with Jerry right now, so this is the best scenario they can think of as to why it's okay.

Our assistant director of personnel is our secret GM. Keep that on the down low.
