Washington (AFP) - Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Heath Miller, a two-time Super Bowl champion, said on Friday he is retiring after 11 NFL seasons.

Miller, who spent his entire career in Pittsburgh, caught 592 passes for 6,569 yards and 45 touchdowns over 168 regular-season games -- all Steelers records for tight ends.

But he turned his back on a contract that would have paid him $4.4 million (3.9 million euros) next season.

"I will always cherish and value the special bonds that I formed with my teammates. It was truly an honor for me to take the field with them," Miller said.

Among all tight ends in NFL history, Miller ranks sixth in catches and ninth in reception yardage.

"Heath is the most accomplished tight end in team history and his efforts will not soon be forgotten," Steelers president Art Rooney II said.

Fantastic blocking TE in the league, doesn't show up on the stat sheet, but he was great in that department. For some reason, outside of a couple years, he was never a huge receiving weapon. I think he had the talent to be one of the better receiving TEs, he just joined a ground and pound team early in his career and then later on a big offensive weapon in Brown emerged taking looks away from Miller.

I'm not a Steelers fan, but man, a lot of greats retiring. That entire great Steelers team from 2004-2008 is nearly non-existent in the league now.

Okay, that is surprising. I always thought he was good, but those rankings are great. Shocking that he actually put up that kind of career. :/

Kind of suprising. Pittsburgh is in the top 3 to win the superbowl next year imo.

I think Steelers have plans for Jesse James. He was a great blocker in college, something the Steelers seem to value highly with their TEs.
