NEWPORT, Ky. -- Bengals guard Eric Steinbach was arrested and charged with boating under the influence on the Ohio River, becoming the fifth Cincinnati player in three months accused of breaking the law.

Nicholson LB Burglary, grand theft Matthias Askew DT Resisting arrest Odell Thurman LB League substance abuse policy violation x-unlawful transaction with a minor (three counts, will stand trial in September), speeding, operating a vehicle under the influence, felony possession of a concealed firearm, possession of marijuana

A Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources officer stopped Steinbach because he was violating an idle-only zone Saturday night, agency spokesman Mark Marraccini said.

Steinbach failed a series of field sobriety tests, Marraccini said.

The player was released from the Campbell County jail in Newport after posting bond and was to appear in court Tuesday, jail and court records show.

The Bengals had the day off Sunday, their first free time since they opened training camp in Georgetown, Ky. Steinbach practiced with the team Monday and declined comment about the case.

Steinbach was a first alternate for the Pro Bowl last season, when he started all 16 regular-season games and a playoff loss to Pittsburgh. He was part of a line that allowed only 21 sacks, a club record.

The Bengals generally do not comment on players' arrests.

The team has been on the defensive over the recent player arrests and a suspension. Receiver Chris Henry leads the list, with four arrests since December. He is to go on trial later this month in Orlando, Fla., on a gun charge.

The Bengals drafted defensive end Frostee Rucker and linebacker A.J. Nicholson in April despite their problems in college. Both were arrested before they began negotiating contracts -- Rucker for spousal battery, Nicholson for burglary and grand theft.

Cincinnati police used a stun gun on third-year defensive tackle Matthias Askew last month and charged him with resisting arrest.

Middle linebacker Odell Thurman is suspended for the first four games of the regular season for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

the question is, he'll be a FA at the end of the year, so considering this, and if the Bengals don't resign him, would you guys want him?

me, I sure as hell do

Had a few brews out boating- that is pretty common. Still not smart. Depends on if this guy can straighten himself out. Though this is the first I have heard of him having any problem at all. I would love to get him as a player.

In a heartbeat!!! He is very versatile. He played C,& LT as well as LG for the Bengals last season. Was an alternate at the PB. He pulls like a muther and would be perfect in a Parcells OL. They'd be crazy not to resign him, althought they have 2006 2nd Andrew Whitworth in waiting so you never know? Problem is, if Rivera has a great year, what do you do with him? But i'm sure Steinbach can play RG till Rivera is gone. If Flo comes back strong and we find a future RT between Rob and Marc, i'd consider him in FA to really shore up the OL. That's of cours not knowing what KK will do.

didn't a few Cleveland Indian Pitchers die several years back while boating under the influence? That can be very dangerous

operating anything under the influence can prove very hazardous

I'm curious to know what his blood-alcohol level was, just looks like they only asked him to take the field sobriety test

Yes. I'm a Mets fan and i remember it well because Bob Ojeda was involved, an Ex-Met. Steve Olin and Tim Crews both died and Ojeda was injured. They were drinking and it was after dark and they hit wooden pier at 60 m.p.h. Ojeda was lucky to survive.

when are cops going to learn that rich folks can easily get off if all you do is administer a field test?

FA is the wrong way to build an OL. Steinbach's a good player but he's going to be looking for tackle money. Personally I'm hoping for a major hit with Kosier and Petitti/Columbo and rebuild through the draft. Start with center (Al Johnson goes unless he really steps up-Kyle Young anyone?) go to guard the following year to draft the replacement for Rivera and then back to tackle the year after to draft Flo's replacement.
