Stephen Bowen pushing for more PT?

Argument: Stephen Bowen is better than both Canty and Spears and should see more reps. I've re watched each game and focused on the d-line. Bowen stands out in his pressure on the QB and on run plays he handles his blockers pretty well while Canty and Spears get abused all too frequently. Spears loves to fall on the QB after another player has gotten the sack.

Anybody else notice this? I know they have much more money invested in Canty and esp Spares, but that money ain't making the plays. Bowen has bigger upside than 96 or 99, imo.

Discuss.

Bill Clinton.
He has a sack or a near sack averted by holding from behind in each of the past 3 games.

Including the NE game in the long pass to welker he was grabbed from behind, of course no call was made

I have not noticed this.

Canty and Spears have been playing well IMO.

Canty is credited with 14 tackles -Spears with 13. Oh, and Spears with 1/2 a sack.

(For reference, Kenyon Coleman (Jets) has 36 tackles and ranks 1st in the league. Osi has 7 sacks and is #1 there.)

Still happy with Spears and Canty in view of those stats? I don't think Bowen is Freeney, but he'd be pretty productive if given more PT.

And I'm not shocked that nobody else has noticed Bowen much because he's not a guy who demands attention, but if you focus on him when he's in there or watch a replay i think you'll agree with my assessment.

So teams run at Kenyon Coleman and Osi has played against 2 rookies OTs in back to back weeks.

Is that what you are trying to say?

BTW, I never said Bowen was bad, I like our current DLine rotation and it only gets better when Tank is back.

As mentioned, I simply pointed out the league leaders as a reference point. Didn't imply anything else but where Spears and Canty fall objectively in the grouping. And I'm aware that Osi U's numbers are inflated a bit...that's not all that relevant anyway becasue OU is far superior to any DE we have, we know that, but it would be nice to get more production than we've been getting. That's all I'm saying. Give peace a chance.

He's definitely starting to eat into Canty's playing time more and more as the season goes along.

i agree that i think he has done an admirable job so far in the time he's played.

one thing i notice is that he seems to get pushed to the outside of the QB when he rushes, but that could be more on how well the OT plays him than it is his rush style.

i think he just adds to the great depth we are building on the d-line, and i would keep it how it is now.

also, the stat on Osi having 7 sacks so far, you do realize that he got 6 of those against "Wince"ston Justice in ONE game right?

Yes, I realize OU's number's are inflated as I mentioned above... I saw that game and it was comical.

I posted numbers of just about all the 3-4 DE's in the league the other day...the numbers dont support your argument, rather they show that regardless pretty much of what team, DE's in the 3-4 are not getting sacks this yr

Bowen is pushing his way into the lineup more and more, and definitely getting noticed when he's in there. I wouldn't be surprised to see him and Canty splitting reps as time goes on.

Me, too. :)

And to what dbair was saying, I wonder if sacks league-wide might be down. I don't know; I'm just guessing. But I sure have seen a lot of rushers being held with no call this year.

I still suspect the league has told officials not to call these unless it's really blatent... All in the name of offense, of course. (Damm you, Rich McKay.)

Any defensive lineman will seem more effective playing 15-20 snaps per game in passing situations than playing 40-50 snaps per game and coming out in passing situations.

Bowing is playing well, but he won't be pushing for a starting job anytime soon, barring injury.

not suprising since Canty is best at stopping the run, and that's all he'll ever probably be good at, he wasn't much of a guy who made plays behind the LOS in college, esp. rushing the QB, either

to the OP, I've noticed Bowen too, esp. against the Pats, where he exploded into the backfield to stop the backup RB for a loss late in the game, that was a hell of a play, too bad he couldn't wrap up, that should have been a 3-4 yard loss instead of just 1, but a stop behind the LOS is one just the same, I was impressed, since his guy went backwards when he was trying to go forwards
