CBS has found its man. And it didn't take very long.

On Thursday, the network announced the replacement for outgoing "Late Show" host David Letterman. Stephen Colbert, whose satirical "The Colbert Report" on Comedy Central competes in the same time slot, has landed the sought-after gig.

"Simply being a guest on David Letterman's show has been a highlight of my career," Colbert said in a statement released by CBS. "I never dreamed that I would follow in his footsteps, though everyone in late night follows Dave's lead.

"I'm thrilled and grateful that CBS chose me. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go grind a gap in my front teeth."

I love, LOVE "The Colbert Report". Hope he transitions well into that role.

He's definitely got the humor & wit that is needed to "liven up" a pretty stale format. I worry if he won't fall into the Conan trap of making it too much about himself and not the guest. I loved Conan on NBC originally with Andy but will acknowledge that I would hate the style of his show if I didn't find him funny. Which is fine for fans of the host, but not necessarily for casual fans picking between one yawn in a blue and one yawn in a grey suit.

Love Stephen Colbert, but I don't know if I like this.

I'd almost rather he and his entire show be moved over into that time slot rather than having him host a late night talk show.

He'll make it great, though. The guy just does not run out of material.

He'll beat Fallon's ratings.
Not a fan. Never understood his giggling throughout every skit while @ SNL as well. If I was another cast character I would've pulled him aside for trying to steal every skit he was in with his on cue "can't help himself" smirking and laughing. He tried to steal the "Cowbell" scene from Ferrel and Walken. One of my favorite skits of all time :D Not funny and can't keep character. Lifetime gig?

On a side note: If you have never checked out Colbert's early work as a teacher on "Strangers with Candy", you should really check it out. Same type of humor, and his character is hilarious. I would just youtube it.

This was not a at stretch at all.

I thought of him as soon as letterman announced retirement.

Both have that unfunny approach that for some reason creates a fan base.

Should be louie CK
For the sake of his comedic genius, I'm glad he did not sell out and go mainstream. He is just the antithesis of mainstream comedy. Did you see his spoof episdoe of the late night wars with Seinfeld, Chris Rock, etc? Great episode and insight into the cutthroat nature of landing nightime talk show gigs.

By far the best comedian performing stand-up today.

I'm not sure how well it will work. I love Colbert, but I think his ridiculousness is more suited for a CC audience. That's not saying he can't adapt, but I don't think he'll be able to move to late night network with the same antics/feel and be successful. It's a totally different audience. Letterman was very funny and clever. Colbert's humor is ridiculous.

I did it was great, if Patrice O'neal was alive he would be his only competition

I would think the Colbert you get on the Colbert Report will not be the same Colbert on late night.

I'm pretty surprised at this. John Stewart would have been a home run. Colbert, not so much. I guess we'll see.

He had a show years back. I liked it.

He is soooo not funny....now!

Watch his stand up (if you haven't). The shows are just fluff in comparison. Daniel Tosh is another "smart" comedian that you wouldn't recognize doing stand up. Much more socially/politically aware then one would imagine. Patrice O'Neal could put an audience on blast for 60 minutes just improvising cuts on the crowd. One of the last "man's man" stand ups.

I was kinda hoping it would be Conan, in a funny/ironic way since him and Letterman had similar situations. And I read his TBS contract was up in 2015.

The question is if Colbert will be himself or his persona.

Hate to say it because I love Jon Stewart, but I believe he has hit his hiatus in his entertainment career. Does anyone else get the sense that he is getting bored with the Daily Show? I also believe people associate him with politics and not in the joking manner displayed with Colbert. The only future endeavor that could top what he has accomplished @ CC, would be to formally get into politics/running for office, etc.

would be awesome. but just seeing how much the daily show has aged him may scare him out of any political endeavor. maybe he will just...chill
