Dallas should focus on the Steele extension right now. Get him signed. I really doubt Lamb is gonna sign now, he will want to wait until the Jefferson signing.....unless he feels he can fleece the Cowboys FO. The only positive thing for the FO is at least they have Tolbert, Brooks, and a few others they can dangle as leverage in their negotiations. I know they are not at Lamb level at the moment, but it ain't like the cupboard is bare. No way should Lamb be setting the market at WR. The WR numbers are getting ridiculous now...$25m--$30m is too much to pay for just one........especially when teams are needing more of them in multiple WR packages.
If they tried to use Tolbert and Brooks as leverage, Lambs number probably goes up 10m per year

Nope.

He could tear his ACL on the first snap of week 1 and still get $25m+. The idea that he's going to suffer some sort of catastrophic career-ending injury is myth. He probably has injury insurance anyway.
The injury concern as a myth is very real. Dak had about as bad of an injury as you can have and got paid. You're spot on with the insurance these guys carry today they have no reason to be quick to the table to negotiate because of injury concerns.

That factor and high end cost is how Dallas got Lance...

Well no it's not, but it's also immaterial to the point we're making.
If only blind didn't apply to ignorant as well...run back to one's homies now.

The 49'ers moved on because of running implications at QB, changed from the franchise choice of quarterback. Dallas picked up Lance because they have a style where it matches up in their QB scheme already, and value placed already for that snap shot on this player.

Now take your play back out to the street or keep striving to become a fossil in sedimentary rock formations.

This isn't English, I don't know what you're talking about.

Why do I get the feeling that trading for Lance just cost us $200M

FTR I'm in favor of the two players listed in this thread being extended. I'd give CeeDee a $1 more than the $25M per year that the 2nd group is getting

Here's the thing CD lamb might think he's worth the same money or more than Jefferson but he's not Jefferson is a top five CD lamps top 10 you know five spots down from Jefferson I mean there's gonna be some gap between the two contracts I mean it's ridiculous if we pay CD Lam the same money Jefferson gets when he's clearly shown he's closer to elite and city lambs just closer to great. I guess that is something you have to bring to the table when you're negotiating but I don't know what our fans think of it but if he's waiting for Jefferson to reset the market I doubt he's getting exact Jefferson money...

By the way that last statement about money being ridiculous all the numbers for almost all the players are becoming ridiculous look what the defensive ends or an inside tackle like Chris Jones wants I mean you got guys like Zach Martin coming back to the table early for more money I mean all the contracts you know why this is happening because quarterbacks are being paid so much it's having a trickle down effect they're all going hey I bring as much to the team as the quarterback I want that type of big time money as well give me my keys.. The quarterback money is so out of control for especially for some of the players and not even that good look with Daniel Jones and Carson wentz all of them are getting their players that are looking up at them guys and going hey I'm better than them I want big money I want as much money as I can possibly get..

Tolbert and Brooks??? If we dangled Tolbert and Brooks CeeDee would realize how badly we need him and double his offer.

All for it. Seems like the ONLY winning strategy these days is to get ahead of the market.

Today’s record contract is tomorrow‘s low ball contract.

The Dallas Cowboys held their annual Cowboys Season Kickoff event at The Star in Frisco earlier this week. Players and front office personnel were asked their thoughts on various topics regarding the team. Executive Vice President Stephen Jones was one of them, and he had some words that piqued the interest of Cowboys Nation.

As first reported by Dallas Morning News Reporter Michael Gehlken, Jones stated that Dallas was “working hard” on extensions for WR CeeDee Lamb and RT Terence Steele. Dallas has done a good job massaging the salary cap this offseason with contract extensions and restructures.

A contract extension for Lamb or Steele wouldn't necessarily create room in the 2023 salary cap, but it would have other advantages.

GETTING AHEAD OF THE MARKET

There are two main reasons for getting ahead of the rest of the NFL when negotiating contracts with players. One, coming to an agreement prior to the expiration of the contract prevents teams from having to use the dreaded franchise tag. Two, the sooner teams strike deals with players, the cheaper the contract.

If they want Lamb to sign today, that number is going to be over $30m, or very close to it. He'd be dumb to sign for anything less than that.

Higgins and Ridley are FAs after this year, and are likely to hit that $25m mark.
Then he tears his Achilles in week 2 and becomes a journeyman receiver.

Careful what you risk.

Around 1995, those kind of contracts killed the Dallas cap...injuries change a lot as to projections.

Probably why Dallas ended up with Lance, now.
Agree but remember in 1995 the cap was relatively new and teams were learning how to manipulate it on the fly. Now everybody knows how to creatively add bonus money and ghost years to contracts that allow the hit to get spread out into future seasons. And with the understanding the cap increases every year, it makes the potential "dead money" less of a factor.

When the Cowboys signed Deion Sanders in 1995 the cost was so high they actually carried just 48 players instead of 53 on their week one roster in 1996. They were literally just a few thousand dollars under the cap. Then they got some contracts re-structured and were actually able to field a complete team. Crazy times.

Cowboys don't have a scheme for a running QB in any way shape or form because Dak is not a "mobile" QB

CeeDee is not a top 3 WR, he is a top 10 WR. However, he may view himself as a top 3 guy and that will probably make the extension difficult.

I don't care what the new science says, one doesn't come up with gold by mixing together a bunch of chemicals....for the record.
