Stephen Jones - Mingo, Tolbert & Flournoy all have the potential to be a WR2

So now that they are trading for Pickens I guess we have to assume Stephen was gaslighting us about Tolbert, Mingo and Flournoy.

We can also assume they burned a 4th round pick in the 2025 draft because with Pickens on board, Mingo is not going to get a chance to put up or shut up. This is the Cowboys way.
You can assume wrong in all these assumptions you remember what they said about assuming do I need to break that apart they did not burn a 4th round pick the guy can sit here and develop it's not like we can't use more wide receivers yes it was a bad trade but this is a good trade literally a 3rd round pick which will probably be a low 3rd round pick and they swapped 5th round picks I mean alone this trade washes that one out you realize that happens right teams make mistakes then they have to double down and try to make up for it well this is making up for it...

It was 100% fluff to prop up those three. None of them have shown they are starting caliber WRs to this point, and it would have been foolish to go into the season expecting one to take that leap.

Honestly you start to wonder if Mingo is still a lock to make the roster....Lamb/Pickens/Tolbert/Turpin seem like locks. Makes for some serious competition between Campbell/Mingo/Flournoy/Brooks/Holden for that last 1-2 spots

He didn't prop them up he said they all have potential and Tober absolutely has potential to be a wide receiver too but he also backed it up by saying they have not earned that spot yet and they would look elsewhere he did exactly what he said you guys have blown this out of proportion to a point I don't understand around the draft he said this he said we have a lot of wide receivers in this locker room that could be a number 2 wide receiver but none of them have stepped up and earned it yet he was talking about their potential and he said they'd be looking outside the building had they not got one in the draft that they were comfortable with and they did exactly what they said

And you guys will twist anything even if it's positive the man told you the truth he backed it up with action and you guys are still misinterpreting what was said so you can have a debate and have an anger responses towards Jerry and Stephen that's all this place has become now you hate dak you hate Steven and you hate Jerry that's it you'll twist anything they say to fit your hate narratives...

We get it you don't like it eating about the Cowboys and they make a good move and you say that they lied to you they lied to you at all this was no fool you can't even misinterpret what they said I heard it around draft day and it's right there in black and white..

You want me to back up Tobert being a number two that he could at least be a number 2 SOMEDAY, the fact is his numbers were as good it's about 75% of the moves made for guys who could be put in the soon to be wasp or washed category you know the ones that Cowboys didn't go get and Michael Gallup and Debo Samuels and Brandon Cooks letting him walk guys like Amari Cooper and Keenan Allen these guys are on the steady decline they're on the downside this train makes the Cowboys a top five wide receiver duo in the entire football league right now.. Tolberts numbers were literally as good as most of these guys we're just using last year because that's all we got to go by and Tobert still young and he's still growing but now look at our depth..

They put their money where their mouth is they stepped up and did exactly what they said and now I'm wondering what the other trade possibly could be or what the other edition could be this was already in my opinion and I've been saying it for weeks the best offseason we've had in years the draft was better than people are giving it credit for , And with four months left they could still make more moves they could make moves all the way up the trade deadline and everybody around here acting like the injuries didn't happen last year and they're putting us at the bottom of the NFC East it's ridiculous i've been saying it all offseason but now I'm starting to see their vision and they're doing more it may not look like all in like you know the Rams in Philadelphia and San Francisco have done but this is the best offseason the Cowboys have had in many years..

Why are we assuming Tolbert is a lock to make the team? I would hope that Mingo gives him at least a serious challenge.

How awful will it be if Mingo does not make the team after giving up a 4th round pick for him just 5 months ago?

A 100 percent a man who put up over 600 yards and seven touchdowns which stacked up to a bunch of free agent moves he's absolutely a lot to make this team you guys don't see it because you're trying to compare him to a number one or a true number two this man deserves to be on the team he's headed towards being a version of Michael Gallup there's nothing wrong with having a deep depth chart..
It's the fringe guys do you not understand it's all those guys I have been here for years like Brooks and Cropper that will not even probably make all of camp I mean maybe they're preseason bodies now but they're gone a lot of the players who've been holding on from the old coaching staffs are gone the players that have been picked more recently are gonna stay but a guy who put up close to the same numbers as Amari Cooper Keenan Allen ,debo Samuels, Brandon Cooks and even close to Cooper Cup last year that's how good his numbers were I know they went very silent because it doesn't look explosive but the man can play football and he's still improving..

To me this is like a miles Austin situation it took him a while to come around and then with minus the hamstring injuries or you can look at a guy who was a surprise like who thought Patrick Crayton can do what he did he was an ex quarterback turned into a receiver literally that's who Jalen Tober is and he is gonna be on this team as long as he keeps improving even on a cheap contract when his contract comes up he's a type of guy you want on your team for depth..

How can he give him a serious challenge not in a real game the man had over 600 yards and seven touchdowns at 12 yards per catch he's not going to get bumped it's the other guys that are going to get bumped it's going to be hard for guys like cropper holes and Brooks and other guys to even make the team how about fluornoy ,you trying to act like any of these dudes have done anything in the actual regular season a real games he's not getting bumped there's nothing they can do in camp that's going to make Tolbert not on this team where does the hate coming from this man put up legitimate valid numbers last year..

Your guys minds are in the wrong place, there's a lot of guys on this team now that won't make the roster because everything now got slid down but definitely Tolbert and Turpin are on this team as wide receivers a hundred percent.

.locks; Lamb, Pickens, Tolbert and Turpin.. Rest will be fighting and maybe Mingo gets another shot because he was a waste of the 4th rounder now you're talking about even less spots and I think the person who might get bunked would be Mingo if he looks bad in preseason because I think Holden from Oregon is already going to be a pet cat for junior Adams who's our wide receiver coach who brought him here because he was his coach in Oregon and this guy has more to his game than people realize.

Most of that is fine...I really dont care too much about Stephens exact quote, and care more about the actual roster construction piece. I guess I could take back the "fluff" statement i had if the quote was more about potential than anything, maybe that has been more the fan base talking up Turpin and Mingo, but I still stick by saying that none of those three have shown capable of being a starting WR to this point, and the Cowboys had to make a move. Personally I was expecting them to keep their draft picks and go grab Cooper, but bringing in Pickens is still a quality move, at least for this year.

Where I would push back is on Tolberts numbers being as good as some of these other guys....His counting stats were low end #2 WR level, but he ran the 19th most passing routes in the league last year (553) and only turned that into 80th in catches (49) and 64th in yards (610).

Basically Tolbert was given WR1 snaps this year and it resulted in WR3 type of numbers. Good for him on the durability, there is some value in that, but his efficiency as a WR wasn't there last season. Comparing him to guys that were available this year like Samuel (51/670 on 420 routes), Kupp (67/710 on 357 routes), Cooper (44/547 on 357 routes) just isnt an apples to apples comparison. Its like propping up the 1000 yard rusher who you fed 350 carries to. Good for them, but you really want to look at more efficient way to get 1000 yards out of a back. Tolbert has some value, but has also shown to be limited with his route tree.

I think it would be pretty tough to cut Tolbert. Maybe lock isnt the right category, but hes got to be pretty close to it. If anything I would imagine they could look at the trade route for Tolbert if you see serious progress out of a couple other guys down the depth chart.

Actually he is an add-in I forgot about Peyton Hillis he's probably sitting there going yeah I'm not even gonna make this team I forgot he was there but there's a lot of players like Brooks and Cropper and others that won't even get a shot now but Tolbert is an absolute lock put it in writing put it in three inch headlines he's not going anywhere the man had a great season last year as a wide receiver three wasn't his fault that everything else was bad last year.

I mean there are only so many roster spots...They've done a nice job building up strong depth along the interior OL, DL, RB, and now WR positions. Gotta figure they may keep an extra DB early on if Diggs/Revel are not quite ready for 50+ snaps but healthy enough to avoid the PUP. Might be tough to keep an extra WR on the roster this year and you have Mingo, Campbell, Brooks, Flournoy, Holden all fighting for 1-2 spots. I'm sure Mingo has a leg up going into camp, but I certainly wouldnt say hes a lock.

I forget what your point was honestly,
My suggestion would be to read a post before anwering it. Whats more read the topic of the thread maybe also.

If you dont understand the post ask the autor. PM is also an option.

Answering completly out of context makes you look kind of silly dont you think?

even though the odds are low, i was getting somewhat excted about holden. would be a very cowboys-esque thing for him to get pushed out after this, and go somewhere else and flourish

No, no. I read the post, understood it when I read it. But then, it just didn't really stick out to remember.

But if you look at it, I was talking about Blue getting some receiver reps in response to your comments about receiving position.

The out of context comments are ironic, don't you think?
