OXNARD, Calif.
– When the dust settles from Tuesday’s dustup with the Rams, the Cowboys know they must get refocused for the next two preseason games (Sunday at San Francisco and the customary ‘dress rehearsal’ game Aug. 29 against Minnesota) as they prepare for the biggest date on the 2015 calendar: the Sept. 13 opener against the Giants.

“This is an important time for us in building our team,” executive vice president Stephen Jones said. “We all know that these next 10 days leading up to that third preseason game are going to be a big, big deal in terms of how we get this team prepared for the season.”

They’ll have to do it despite new injuries to the roster, particularly on the offensive line.

Typically these next two games include progressively more playing time for the starters. But with four of five linemen sidelined or limited by recent injuries – guards Zack Martin (stinger) and Ronald Leary (back) joined tackles Tyron Smith (biceps) and Doug Free (foot) on the injury list Tuesday – there could be a trickle-down effect to quarterback Tony Romo’s playing time Sunday.

The Cowboys' depth is being affected at other positions, too, with projected starters/contributors such as receiver Cole Beasley (sore Achilles), defensive linemen Nick Hayden (ribs) and Tyrone Crawford (back), and cornerbacks Brandon Carr (hand), Orlando Scandrick (knee) and Byron Jones (shoulder) recently or currently banged up.

Still, the team will press on, and it starts with moving past Tuesday’s shortened practice due to multiple skirmishes. Jones anticipates head coach Jason Garrett will reiterate his message to the players about channeling their passion for football the right way...

Good -- keep ALL the starters out; that way they'll all be available for the regular season. Did Dwayne Harris have a point after all about too much intense contact in TC?? Really makes me wonder with all these injuries taking place. Guess we'll have to wait and see how we fare when the action opens up for real vs. the Giants. Meanwhile, the injuries keep piling up and the list of unavailable starters continues to mount. Scary stuff.

There would likely be a lot of panic over this among the Cowboy fan base but I don't care. We'll still beat the G-Men.

As long as none of these seem major injuries. Limit some practice time. Don't be concerned with the game at SF. Have them ready for the Vikings game for their 1st hal game play, or a bit less, a bit more for some. I agree the next few weeks are important, but more so for the bubble players for those last 6 to 8 roster spots.
The real stuff won't be implemented until they are back in Valley Ranch away from the cameras.

No Dwayne Harris did not have a point. His new team has had a lot of even more serious injuries this offseason.

It's just football..

I think the Giants have way more serious injuries than we do.

We only have one season ending injury. The Giants have had multiple and have over the last 3 years been comically degraded due to injuries.

To answer your question he was right in that we practice with intensity. You're wrong however to assume we are worse off from an injury perspective because of it.

Kinda figured my post would stir up the masses around here. Good to see you're all keeping up -- lol.

Nice to know. Hate to see any team get serious injuries, even if it is just the Giants.

If the OL is still in shambles I'd strongly consider not playing Romo or even a guy like McFadden. Certainly, no more than a series IMO.

No starters until New York.

I'm fine with that.

I don't think there should be any divisional games in the NFL until at least week 3.

I like opening the season against a division rival. What I don't like is playing a bunch of consecutive division games early in the season, then none for the entire middle part, and then a bunch more at the end of the season. That's how it's been the last few years for us. I like opening and closing the season against a division rival, but I'd prefer if the other 4 division games were spread evenly throughout the season.

Teams are still in preseason mode through most of September. They're not ready for a game as meaningful as a divisional game. This is the "Ohio State vs. The Citadel" part of the season.
