"I think he has taken some big steps. Now, it's more than just the wow play that impresses you with him. I think he is consistently able to go out there and be competitive and show that he is working on his game."

So pretty much he hasn't put everything together yet. Or shown the aptitude to be a starter.

possible translation: we tried to get other guys to step up, but they failed so we are back to square one.

I definitely appears that they collectively made a plan to attempt to humble Rico. They were critical of him in the media and they made it way more obvious than most position battles that he was 4th string in practice and definitely in PS game 1.

Now they are starting to compliment him and give him some 1st string reps in practice.

Maybe they learned from their time with MartyB that you can't just yell at those types of players and expect it to work (see John Garrett).

Back in his 1st or second year. MartyB basically said that Witten should move over because he (MartyB) was the better player.

All we need to see in Rico is that he is working to become a better football player.

Talent wise, there wasn't as much difference between Witten and Bennett as fans want to believe. Witten was definitely more polished, professional, company line kind of guy, which fits more in line with majority fans beliefs in how football players should act. More anonymity, less individuality. I do believe that part of what ruined Bennett here was that they continued to try to make him Jason Witten, and he's not that guy. I am not even sure why fans care so much about a guys personality as long as he shows up on Sundays and isn't negatively influencing another guy.
