Stephen Jones on the FAN now...w/recap Post #5

Someone please provide a recap when it is over. Thanks in advance.

1) Would consider drafting developmental QB. 2) Will draft their board not force need. 3) They are taking a look at Winston

He is excited that our team is healthy, specifically mentioned Lee, Carter. Ratliff and Ware. Felt Defense will be much better being healthy.

Safety see some promise in young guys and 1st round doesn't translate to 1st round selection, but they still felt there was work to be done in that area.

Hall of Fame game, just excited to play in it, get the 4-3 defense going.

Said that they are going through scenarios now, Garrett, Jones and himself all fight it out now (so to speak) and come draft time, they pretty much all understand the pick.

Winston is being looked at, but sounded as draft is the key to that move or not.

Talked about not having money, he said he knew last year that we would not be big players, but basically wasn't stressed because all these restructures are built into contracts. Tony took longer then they expected but everything worked out.

QB could be looked at if right person, they tried with McGee but it didn't work out.

Said it was tough not to draft to need sometimes, but that is why they meet now, to understand players true grade vs need. Seems like they are approaching the draft very good. Said we need to find players that will help the Dallas Cowboys be better.

Talked about media bashing, he said media has a job and he understands, and they have a job to do as well.

Doug Free hasn't been fully dismissed, they saw his potential, he didn't live up to it last year. He didn't say he was staying or going, but they are truly not being hasty on their decision with him.

Asked status of Josh Brent and he said that Josh needs to focus on his life right now. No comment on him being on the team next year, waiting on the league to make their ruling.

Thanks.

Thanks for the recap guys...Really appreciate it.

He also talked about Monte and Rod and is real excited about them coaching the Defense. He seemed high on Dooley as well, anxious to see what he brings to the table.

One thing on Winston, he really sounded like we are interested but decision will come after the draft. To me, it actually sounded like Winston could very well be a Cowboy if we do not get a tackle. Thats my speculation, but it was interesting that he didn't deny their interest.

Stephen deserves some of the blame of our team underperforming, but for me I think he will make a great owner for the Cowboys.

who the hell is evaluating these guys?

Oh, I was hoping we'd draft guys that help the 49ers :laugh2:

Thanks for the recap.

basically as regards the RT selection the fact that he said that the draft would decide about Winston means Free is pretty much gone. If they do not get a RT in the draft they sign Winston and jettison Free. ONLY if they do not get Winston or draft a RT does free have a chance to hang around

And it has to be at a significantly reduced salary if he stays. He has to know he's not getting jack squat on the open market...

.

I saw on the NFL NW last night that Jacksonville says only three peole will know their pick when they walk to the podium: the owner, gm, and head coach.
They had it narrowed down to two players (seeing that they pick 2nd , that makes sense) and would decide which one is tops in a day or two.

Just sounded a bit unusual that only three would know the finalists.

just some trivia...

The scouts have to have knowledge of the board already set up. I guess they have those two players on the same plateau.

Interesting that he would make the comment he did at Safety, with regards to 1st round. It's not that I don't believe the Cowboys would view Vaccaro as such but rather, that they would make this opinion known. What possible advantage could there be to letting this information get out?

Well I still don't know what, '1st round doesn't translate to 1st round selection' means exactly. Do they think they can get first round talent at safety later in the draft or what.

Maybe I wrote that wrong, he basically said they are not pressed to pick a safety in the 1st round, but they would take BPA, so that could be a safety.

He was just trying to tell everyone the team will go BPA and they like their young guys. But he felt the position still needed more depth.

Sorry if I put it out there wrong.
