I would take this as an indication that they don't believe Romo will be back to normal. Unless it is a smoke screen. You don't draft a guy with a no 4 pick that you hope to sit for 3 years. No one in the history of the NFL ever has that I can think of. Even Rodgers picked late in the first was expected to play sooner but Brett Farve played longer than they thought and again, Rodgers was picked late in the first.

Or it could mean the most likely thing, like normal, non conspiracy theorists would speculate. Like for instance, Romo is going to be 36 years old with a bad back? Or how with his age and back problems NOBODY knows how much longer he can play? Or how unless you have a franchise QB in his prime, you always draft the franchise QB? Nah, you're probably right. It has to be a grand indictment on his immediate future. I mean who would have the forethought to plan for the future anyways? I mean who wants to waste a pick on a franchise QB when the football Gods will deliver one to our doorstep the moment we need one?

I don't disagree. I was a big fan of getting one of the top 3 QBs in the 1st round. I still like the idea. But I'm wondering if that's the route we should go. Romo will be 36 when the season starts. He definitely has had his fair share of injuries over the years. The good news is he seems to be getting better every year. He's a real student of the game and a bit of a late bloomer. If he stays healthy, I see no reason why he can't play at a high level for a few more years. So it really comes down to how long they think he has left. Manning is almost exactly 4 years older and he looks done. But he looked good last year in the first half of the season. So you wonder if Peyton looks so bad because he isn't healthy or if he's just finished. On the other hand, Brady is 2.5 years older and still looks as good as ever. But hey, Peyton looked just as good 2 years ago before hitting a wall. That's the thing. QBs don't slowly decline. They usually hit a wall. So if Romo does manage to stay healthy, he'll probably hit a wall in 3 years anyway. The odds of every QB in history shows so. Brett Favre was 35 when the Packers drafted Rodgers and coming off one of the best years of his career. He played 3 more years with GB and then another 3 years elsewhere. So who knows? Maybe Romo does have another 5 years left in him.

The other thing is a qb's second contract can be a real doozy if he ends up being good. Even as a first rd pick that can be extended the extra year, the boys would only have two years to decide if he is worth what could be a 150 to 200 mil contract by the time it rolls around if Romo plays out his contract. These might be things the snarky genius that typed above you accusing me of being a conspiracy theorist doesn't even think about. Speaking of Manning, it will be interesting to see what kind of contract Osweiler is offered in Denver. He wasn't a top 4 pick or even close but Denver is in a bit of a predicament too. Do they know enough about him to give him a franchise level contract?

They have had conversations Romo about taking a QB at 4. Romo may have told them his plans for future at that time

The only way a QB even gets mentioned in that neighborhood is if they are an elite franchise QB. At that point are you seriously going to complain because he sat the bench for 2-3 years?

The only argument that needs to be made is do they or don't they think the player is a franchise QB. Thats it. That's where it ends. Anything else is worthless to even consider in the position this team is in.

Keep an eye on what the do in FA prior to the draft. Stephen has said that a backup or the QB situation is the top priority. If we don't sign a QB with a name prior to the draft... I think that tells you what they plan to do in the draft and most likely first round

Smokescreen.

Could be, surely they have gotten together and discussed how they want to play their media strategy at no.4. I think Stephan and Garrett have good poker faces but they have to keep Jerry from letting the cat out of the bag.

Don't we have to sign a back up QB regardless? After last season I can't see us pinning our hopes to the draft.

I have no issue with drafting a QB #4 overall. But we had better be all in with free agency and not simply churning the roster by signing backups. I still want a serious push for success this season. There are no powerhouses. The superbowl is doable if the off season is handled correctly.

Too bad theres no franchise qbs in this draft.

There also aren't likely to be any franchise QBs in 2017 either.

Most drafts only have one or two.

This idea that this is a "bad year" does not factor in that the next three years are not expected to be a cornucopia of franchise QBs either.

In other words, if you don't like these QBs, at least be consistent in future years when the talent is the same and the need becomes greater.
