Sign him after game 1. Then his contract is not guaranteed for the entire season.

Sign him now, and he gets injured or does not work out as planned and released him after a few games or so. Then his entire contract counts against the cap.

So the fans that want him will then say Jerry sucks, why didn't he wait until after game 1. Some want them to spend cap $$$ then whine later they don't have any cap space.

hope it works out but there will be other teams trying to do the same which is the benefit of doing it ahead of time.

The Dallas Cowboys have been flirting with the idea of signing free agent linebacker Anthony Barr to bolster their depth at the position since May.

And although they opened training camp without making a move on Barr, vice president Stephen Jones said the four-time Pro Bowler remains a viable option for the Cowboys.

He said the team wanted to take a look at second-year linebacker Jabril Cox and other linebackers in training camp before making a final decision on Barr, who has played eight seasons with the Minnesota Vikings.

Cox played seven games last year before suffering a season-ending torn ACL. His recovery has gone so well that he was not put on physically unable to perform list to start camp and is a full participant, though the Cowboys plan to be cautious when him.

If all goes well, the athletic Cox, a 2021 fourth-round pick, could push Leighton Vander Esch for the starting spot opposite Micah Parsons.

But given the injury histories of Cox and Vander Esch, who returned on a one-year deal, the Cowboys are looking at veteran insurance options.

I'll believe it when I see it. We've heard this song and dance before.
You can believe that they plan on playing Cox who has outstanding potential and they would be interested in signing Barr if they had an injury in camp.

They plan on playing Cox. They are pretty full at linebacker with Parsons, Cox, LVE, Kearse, and their depth guys like Gifford. If they have an injury in camp they probably would sign Barr.
Can't have too much depth...

With Parsons, Cox, Kearse, and LVE, they don't have room for Barr right now. Those 4 guys are going to play. Barr is a guy that you bring in to play.
Then competition is always a good thing!
Bring him in, and see if can earn playing time.

H-m-m, first word gets out that they're not interested and now we're hearing that "the door's not closed." Maybe a media guy, either got the wrong impression, and/or Stephen is having 2nd thoughts on the matter. A desperate need could emerge at any time, however.

Anyway, I'm glad to hear that it's not something that has been totally eliminated from consideration if the situation warrants it. It's always possible for one of our LBs to require a fill-in or extended replacement at some point. Anthony Barr would expect to be well compensated for his services, no doubt.

They just said point blank that they want to see what Cox can do first. You dont sign a guy like Barr to backup, you sign him to start.
You sign him to play, but injuries has prevented him from doing that elsewhere, so why would things be different in Dallas? You don’t pay that kind of money for a backup.
