INDIANAPOLIS -- For those wondering whether the Cowboys will move Jay Ratliff to defensive end in 2012, there’s this answer from Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones:

“I still see Ratliff as our starting nose tackle," Jones said. "Will he see action out there [at defensive end]? I mean you never totally rule it out, but right now we still see him as our nose.”

Earlier this offseason head coach Jason Garrett did not shoot down the chances of the Cowboys moving to a 4-3 defense in 2012, which would involve Ratliff sliding away from the center. He played defensive tackle when the Cowboys employed their nickel defense, with DeMarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer at defensive end.

Ratliff has played in the last four Pro Bowls but he had only two sacks in 2011, his lowest total since becoming a full-time player in 2006. In 2008-09, he had 13.5 sacks and 64 quarterback pressures. In 2010-11, he has 5.5 sacks and 28 pressures

smokescreen i hope .. unless we are moving to a 4-3 which i hope to god we are if this is the plan.

and Stephen Jones said today he's looking to use the franchise tag and make Anthony Spencer the 2nd highest paid player on the Cowboys in 2011.

This is after signing Orlando Scandrick to $7 million for 2012.

Apple didn't fall far from the tree at all did it?

i don't care if he plays nose or end, what we need is someone other than him to make plays on the line. Hatcher is okay but injury prone and there is no one else. Spears and Coleman make good rotation guys and horrible starters.

A DE or DT would help this defense significantly because I think Ratliff is one of those guys that will make plays wherever he goes.

I agree, however Lissemore showed a lot of upside last season. I'm thinking he'll start next season and really perform well.

lol, well alrighty then. Let's just keep playing the game like we know better than every other successful 3-4 team. It's been working great so far.

Its a 5 year $27 mil deal and we are ~$20m under the cap. Complaining about or cap circumstance or paying a vet that plays about half of your defensive snaps $5m AAV is silly. Top corners make over twice that much.

FWIW, Warren Sapp said on Ben and Skin last week that it wouldn't be a good move to put him at end. Said he played that for Rob and all it does is put a good pass rusher farther from the QB.

Seems like a NT who collapsed the pocket for him would offset that, but I really don't know who played next to Sapp. Overall, just getting Rat more help is probably the main thing.

well then we can scrub Dontari Poe, and 4/5 other beasts on the nose in this draft off our list

lets hope Stephen does not supercede Jerry to the GM spot if this is what we get

Why? The reason he's saying that is because they don't have anyone better to replace him with at the moment.

Agreed.

Am I supposed to respect this opinion? Why don't ask my Mom about it, while I'm at it?

Why do the Jones' insist on contradicting what Garrett said? Who makes the on field decisions? The Jones' or Garrett?

I just don't understand giving Jay Ratliff a $ 48.6 million dollar contract ($ 18 million dollars guaranteed) after he was coming off a significant drop-off in his play and production in 2010. Look at the significant drop-off in sacks and QB pressures during the past two seasons. Ratliff turns 31 this season, and he has been playing a physically demanding position while being under-sized.

The Cowboys received two or three bargain years from Ratliff (2008 and 2009), but they just had to way over-pay him after the fact. It really was a bizarre move by the organization. Ratliff gets $ 18 million guaranteed after his worst season (2010). That is almost $ 20 million dollars.

Ratliff may have made the Pro Bowl the past two years, but I think he made it based off his 2008 and 2009 reputation. Do I think Ratliff is a bad player? No. Do I think Ratliff is worth $ 18 million guaranteed now? No. Do I think Ratliff is overrated? Yes.

Ratliff is being worn down at NT. Move him to end and see if he can generate some more pressure. You know he will hold the point on the run.

It's not a "smoke-screen".

Ratliff is not moving to end, and the Cowboys won't be drafting any 340lb NT come April.

Ratliff was rated by one grading service as the 7th best NT/DT in the NFL.

No, he's not the pass-rusher he was earlier on in his career. But he still managed to garner 2 sacks, 6 QB hits and 21 pressures... and that's for 750 snaps, which was respectable.

You want to know why Ratliff's pass rush is down?

Look at the two lumps that play along side of him, or did for many of the snaps last season.

Coleman & Spears. Combined they had 2 sacks, 2 QB hits and 16 pressures... For 800 snaps total.

That's the real pass rush problem for this defense. It's not Spencer, it's not Ratliff.

On first-down opposing offenses knew they could put their 2 worst linemen on Coleman and Spears and then let the others deal with Ratliff and Ware.

That's the real problem with the pass-rush.

tell me about it. Seems like the jones family will continue to make the cowboys a laughing stock of the nfl....I mean come on thinking about fanchise taging spencer is freaking dumb and laughable:laugh1: . Keeping ratliff at nose which not only hurts our run defense but our MLB's are taking on alot of guards knowing. Ask ray lewis about how much better and easier life is with a big NT tacking on double teams and not getting blown off the ball.

Stephen Jones said it was a "possibility" they use the franchise tag. Get your panties out of wad.
