Stephen Jones & the Dallas Cowboys: From Splash to Caution

Pretty simple...I provided an example of the why...so the league isn't littered with disgruntled stars.

Should Michael Jordan be upset that he signed early and then Scotty Pippen or a player from another team got a better deal. That's not my call...but it happens.

It's just better to stagger the process so that stars are paid for, agents and owners aren't dealing with disgruntled players wanting to fire them or move teams.

It really makes sense. Sure, some guys will sign early. But for the stars wanting to get the first big bag or super stars on their 3rd contract..it's better for all parties to wait and let the bar raise and then sign the star to a deal he is happy with.

Happy player, happy agent, happy owner
I get what you are saying in a way but there isn't any logical reason for any team to pay it's star DE that differently from what another star DE gets from their team. That's why these contracts all end up being very close, with only incremental differences until the cap moves again.

So, the only reason to be disgruntled is when the player is out of touch with reality as to their own worth.

The only scenario that waiting could really be beneficial is when their is some uncertainty or change in league view points. For example, the RB position is enjoying a little more love right now than it has in a decade. If a high level RB wanted to slow play to see what the new norms looked like, I could understand.

Final thought: Every day a player leaves guaranteed monies & up front monies on the table, that player is incurring RISK. Anything happens and they just lost way more than they will ever gain by holding out for the incremental difference.

I get all that. And I get that a lot of players sign early to get their money sooner and to prevent risk.

I think this scenario is mostly about those whom are holding out for big bags or think they are owed a big bag.

Ceedee is a perfect example.

When the situation arises it's best to just put it on the backburner and sign the star at the end of the offseason.

The player gets to see the full market, the team doesn't have a disgruntled player, the agent/agency isn't getting a bad reputation.

well, i think you and i disagree but no biggiee.

I think if Pickens has an incredible star to the year you might see him get a new deal by the middle part of the seasaon. If they could lock him up with Ceedee for the next 3-4 years this offense would be set at wr as a top 5...never say never, they might go the eagles cap managment route :)
What are the Cowboys waiting for? Do they know what they traded for when they acquired Pickens? AJ Bown was the 51st pick in his draft, played three years and was traded to the Eagles. Pickens was the 52nd player picked in his draft, played three years and was traded to the Cowboys. How long did Philly wait to sign Brown to a deal?

Yeah, specifically about Brandon but also how you almost always overpay in Free Agency for coveted players. Below is a summary.

Jerry Jones acknowledged that the Dallas Cowboys paid "retail" for Brandon Carr's contract in free agency, indicating he might have overpaid for the cornerback. While Jones has expressed his appreciation for Carr's ability and commitment to the team, he has also acknowledged that Carr's contract is a significant cap burden, particularly considering his performance.
Yeah and iirc, that was the last time they made a big time splash on a free agent. That was 13 years ago. They have been very cautious and cheap since.

Did they not almost get Dak to sign a contract in 2019 before Wentz got his which was going to be around 31-33 million per year? Then Dak fired his agent and the rest is history. This franchise is probably sitting in a better spot if he actually signed that contract.

They've put stock into the position. Whether we like Romo or Dak they spent money on those two guys as well as their backups.
That's not stock. That's buying a $1 lottery ticket and winning $100. It's great...but it didn't change life...did it?

Putting stock - like the Chiefs did to get Mahomes or like the Ravens did to get Lamar Jackson - is what he's referring to...not bargain basement shopping at the red dot sale.

How is over 300 million bargain basement shopping? They’ve spent over 300 million on Dak and Romo…..

“Daft focus roster building”….does putting NO stock in the most important position on the field for nearly 3 decades fall under this?

Dont read with what these jawsmiths are trying to pollute the air. Makes you just angry.

Drafting 1 qb with a 4th rounder and getting one thru fa after the draftt in the last 20 years is not investing in the position. Not in context of what is discussed here or what the poster meant.

You did not understand the problem nor the topic.

I got over being angry many years ago. I’ve been on the total collapse train for several years now. Only because….maybe this insanity run franchise may be sold or they’ll start putting stock in the QB position. There’s NO light at the end of the tunnel until one of these two things happen. There’s only one reason I watch a handful of games every season, to watch Jerry in the sky box when we’re getting our doors blown off. That’s my only joy in watching this team play.

It’s not that he or many on here don’t understand any topic. It’s because they think if a QB puts on the star, he’s automatically a superstar star and they fill their closet with their jerseys.
