Jones was a little more willing to discuss the NFL trade deadline, which is quickly approaching this coming Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 3 p.m. CST. He didn’t speak in any specifics, but Jones allowed that the Cowboys would consider making a deal in the right situation – especially in positions affected by injuries.

“It’s no secret that we’re moving a lot of guys in and out in our defensive line, and that will probably continue to be the case,” he said. “We’ve already got some workouts scheduled for Monday, in terms of just taking a look at guys … Certainly we’d look at any type of situation there, if the right deal were there. But we also can’t, for a quick fix, do something that would hurt long term.”

The reference to salary cap issues raised another talking point, as recent reports have indicated the Cowboys’ problems with the cap in the upcoming year. Jones said any deal the Cowboys made would have to take those issues into account.

“At the end of the day, it’s got to fit our cap. That’s another thing: it’d have to really fit right to sacrifice our cap some, because it will be an issue for us next year,” Jones said. “We certainly manage our salary cap hand-in-hand with 2013, 2014 and 2015 all side-by-side, as we manage them. We see how that affects each year.”

In years past Stephen has always brushed off cap related questions and assured the media that it wasn't a concern. This year they are openly admitting next year is going to be tough.

Interesting for sure.

I can't tell you how glad I am to hear stuff like this. This team is totally different from the one we were fielding three years ago.

I think he's realising that this next season is going to be significantly tougher to work around the cap than it ever has been and that's why he's talking about caution now.

It's not a change in philosphy for him and his father it's a change because they have zero choice right now.

I doubt Stephen is more concerned about the cap next year or the year after than he was about the previous years.

Cap issues to the Jones boys are only a topic of discussion when it suits their agenda. If they do not wish to discuss trade scenarios they merely mention cap constraints.

I guess he doesn't understand the cap.

Well..

The worst part about the salary cap..

..when you talk about the Cowboys is..

..that we really never have handled it well since it started.

Since the era of the salary cap and the advent of free agency which all occurred right about the same time of the Jimmy Johnson days.

..the Cowboys have not won except for the 90s teams.

They never have fielded a good competitive team that won titles.

Just saying.

I heard Stephen mention before that '14 was going to be "tight" cap wise. This certainly wasn't the first instance.

Everything he said sounded.....logical. Wow, pretty rare I feel that way about a cowboys front office member.

Thats what makes this coming year different from years past. Obviously when all Is said and done they will get to where they need to be in 2014 but they may be running out of gimmicks and may have to make some tough choices with players like Ware etc.

We all know Jerry has been very loyal to his big name players but im not so sure he can afford to be the next couple of years.

I agree with that.

The number of "sacred cows" on this team needs to diminish. That being said I don't see Ware, Romo or Witten being released until the 2015 season at the earliest.

We've got to start getting better at letting go of aging, expensive, under-performing former stars if we're ever going to advance as an organization. Ware really needs to go, the guy has been one of the best players in the history of the franchise, but he just doesn't have it any more, and isn't worth his pay anymore.

I guess I respectfully disagree when it comes to Ware. His pass rush is still very good and he doesn't get nearly enough props when it comes to his run defense.

On top of that I think the cost to release him before 2015 is prohibitively expensive.

I'll take your word for it on the consequences of releasing him, as I've not done my diligence and researched the specifics. If that is indeed the case, then we're pretty much stuck with him, whether we want to or not.

Yes in the off season or during free agency. During those times you can be much more flexible. During the season not so much the cap is what it is during the season.

Regardless of cap consequences, it is premature to release Ware although it's not to be concerned about his neck. He almost has to have some degree of cervical stenosis to keep having this many stingers. Maybe it's just a bulging disc but if so then take care of it in the off season. Heck a fusion isn't career threatening anymore generally speaking.

Well... regardless on if Ware is good/bad or whatever... The team definitely needs to look at defensive linemen as a position of priority come next May's draft.
