Does anyone think he has a chance of moving up the depth chart & become Romo's primary backup?

They burned a 4th on the guy and I know a lot of teams were pretty high on him going into last year's draft.

I don't think it will be this year... or even as long as Kitna is on the roster, maybe after his contract is up though... Kitna is a more than capable back-up bc he has yr's of starting experience in the NFL & even had a few good season's... McGee is a project just like Tony Romo was & I hope he pans out to be the same way but we'll see... I read somewhere someone said that he would be pushed for a roster spot by that undrafted rookie Matt Nichols but I don't think that is true bc I read a blog on DC.com that said he looked terrible in TC so I don't see how he would push for a roster spot or even make the PS for that matter...

I've got no problem with Kitna I'm just hoping we see continued improvement with McGee.

I've heard that QBs usually make their biggest jump between years 1 & 2.

The game slows down for them, they have a better understanding of the playbook, they have that full offseason to work with teammates, etc.

It won't surprise me if he gets cut, replaced by the rookie...we could then carry two active QBs and have the rookie on the PS, gaining a game day roster spot...wouldn't surprise me at all since there haven't been any good reports on McGee this year.

From all the articles I've read (just putting 2 and 2 together), McGee is NOT the answer. His throws are weak and off target and just not what you want from the guy coming in to take over for an injured starter. If McGee is our 2nd then we are scrizewed.

I'm hoping we see something from Matt Nichols, I'm not convinced McGee is a quality backup. Kitna is gone after this year.

From what I heard, the Cowboys said he shows more progress this year than he did last year or gets cut. So, no. I don't think so.

Not this season. I think it is important that he shows improvement from last season to this but I don't think the team is ready to make him a backup at this stage. I think his chances for the biggest improvement will come between year 2 and 3.

I am curious where you read that?

Watching him throw the ball last year in warmups for home games it was clear he had a strong arm. He looks like he can sling it all over the place.

I am curious who said he had a weak arm.

I'll answer your question with a question...would you rather have a seasoned vet (who is not "over the hill" take over the team in event of emergency during a drive to the SB, or would you rather leave the fate of the team in the hands of a player who has never taken an NFL snap?

I looked back at McGee's numbers last preseason vs. Matt Moore's numbers when he was here. Surprised that they were nearly the same, slight advantage to Moore.

I know it's a small sample for both, but while Matt Moore drove the team, moved the team, hit third down passes and hit receivers running downfield when he was in the game, McGee was mostly three-and-out. Moore had a real good touch on the ball, while McGee has a gun but didn't look like he had great rapport with his WRs. He hit guys on hooks or standing wide open but didn't hit WRs on the move too well.

Maybe because of McGee's injury in preseason which I guess lingered into the season, Kitna ran the scout team all year. So McGee is still kind of a mystery.

Moore has been in the league for 3 year heading to his 4th. McGee was a raw rookie last season.

My post was comparing McGee as a rookie vs. Moore as a rookie.

Moore just had a knack (in his stint here) of hitting guys in stride where McGee had trouble with this.

I don't think McGee will be seeing the field much after preseason is over, he's still too raw.

he is another couple of years away. he has hte tools but can he have the mindset and learn the pro game? that's the million dollar question, but you know the patriots have done the same thing for years. they spend a mid round pick on a QB every coiple of years. all you have to do is find a good one once and you are set for years to come.

Does it matter? Romo still has another 7 years left. Second, third. Doesn't matter where he is.

You do not gain a game day roster spot the 3rd QB is inactive and once used the other QB can not return. You can carry an extra player at other positions that will be inactive on game day like a LB wr etc

In a year where the team feels it has a legit shot at the SuperBowl you want to make sure your back-up QB is an experienced vet.

That said, he needs extensive playing time in the exhibition games. Hopefully he stays healthy this time and can get a lot of experience. I would also suggest doing with him what we did with Romo. Let him start and play an entire game, preferably the final exhibition just to see what he does. Since we have an extra game, we should use the extra evaluation time.

It seems like we never get our young QB's enough PT in the Preseason.
