Twitter: Stephen on tagging Pickens

Now we get to see how Pickens responds to the tag.

I'm sure it will go well.
If the reports about him wanting $30 million per year are correct, the tag will pay him $28 million. Will he hold out over $2 million? Should be interesting.

That's not the way he'll see it. He wants the guaranteed money in a long term extension.
Judging by recent history we will get a resolution by the end of August.

If Pickens takes a nap on the trainers table in the third preseason game, then we know it's almost over.

Maybe it’s just me but resigning Aubrey is a no brainer. Right? Right? He’s like the best kicker in the league. And having no kicker comes back to bite teams in the butt constantly. He won’t be that expensive. Why isn’t it done yet?

Look, I get it, once you stop and take a question, it's bad form to say no comment. What you can do is keep walking and say 'sorry guys, I can't talk right now, maybe later...' That gets you off the hook to make any comment or answer any questions.

However, the Jones boys love a microphone. I also understand there's an art to answering a question, without fully answering it. However, it seems like SJ either purposely or intentionally fires shots at the Pickens camp about the use of the tag. All this does is potentially antagonize or create ill will in negotiations for a speedy contract resolution. This seems to happen too frequently.

According to Stevie, there is no advantage to getting a deal done as opposed to playing on the tag. The cap savings is meaningless. They can still do what they need to do.

Which leads you to three possible conclusions. He's completely clueless or they don't intend to spend much anyway or a combination of the two.
You hit the nail on the head.

It is a combination of the two. They definitely are completely clueless AND never intended to be big spenders in FA.

The crazy thing is, the pie they often reference keeps getting bigger due to the League earning so much revenue. These men are aware of it and still self sabotage. If they could lock him in at approximately $30MM AAV in 2026, they will gladly extend him next season at $35MM and complain about how limited the cap is due to paying the two receivers over $33MM each.

The good news is he's a restricted free agent so the Cowboys have a bit more control over this. And making him the highest paid kicker in football is not going to break the cap. The deal will probably get done before free agency starts.

Will anyone with sports media access to Stephen Jones approach Jones again and ask him why George Pickens didn't show up like he was quoted here saying IF that does happen? Don't say what the player will do. Should have learned that lesson with the Micah Parsons fiasco.
Only a fiasco as you say because Micah is a punk. Don’t ask for something and then back out of it because you realized you were not man enough for the situation.

Lol. They could have been proactive and signed him after Year 3. GM malpractice.

Butker is currently the highest paid kicker at 6.4m per year. Aubrey is worth that, easily.

July 14th they'll send a pigeon to David M to see if he'll relinquish agent roles to Pickens so Jerry can try to swindle Pickens on a handshake deal.

I will take “or a combination of the two” for 1000 Alex
Is that my daily double?
