Question, would you just be fine with letting him live if he had raped you, videotaped it, and made you a running joke? I'm going to guess, no.

The still a kid excuse only really works when it's normal kid behavior, drinking/smoking weed, etc., doesn't really fly when it's something all humans over the age of 12 consider inhumane and deplorable.

He *should* be persecuted for the rest of his life just as she'll be dealing with psychological effects for the rest of hers, probably. Rape is one of the most psychological damaging events that can happen to a person, and he barely got a slap on the wrist. If I was that girl's father I'd have to be restrained every time I picked her up from school.
"Normal kid behavior" is subjective. I don't really know much about the kid, but if he hadn't really been conditioned to realize the moral gravity of something like that - which I bet he hadn't - then that is what's normal to him.

Again, you can make the argument that 9 months in juvenile detention or w/e isn't strong enough. I'm fine with that. But afterwards, I don't think it does anybody any good to kick him out of school completely and take away a chance at going to college, getting a good job, etc. for one mistake. I agree that he should change schools, and yes, if I was her father, I would probably have a different opinion obviously.

FYI: She goes to a different school, .. in a different state I believe.
Well I guess that's probably the justification for why he was allowed to return...though I still think he should have to go elsewhere just to get into a new environment.

I'm not sure rape being normal kid behavior is considered subjective, that would imply some would think it's okay which I'm almost certain is not the case unless you're a complete psychopath.

And I'm also not sure a college campus is the best place for a convicted rapist who preyed on a drunk girl. An exception could be him not being able to live in student housing, receive financial aid, and the first time he's caught at a party with alcohol he's placed on supervisory probation, then yeah maybe. Although he did basically ruin half her college experience which is drinking and socializing, I doubt she'll be comfortable doing that around dudes anytime soon.

I don't really think you understand what he did, classifying it as a "mistake" is almost condescending. I've known girls that had everything going for them, were raped and they had to drop out of school because it destroyed them, many turned to drugs and were suicidal because of psychological trauma. Not saying that's whats going to happen to her, but it's extremely common and I have a difficult time saying "he paid his time, let him be", when those very things you mentioned he should be entitled to are going to be a difficult process for her.

I'm all for justice but also rehabilitation, the kid should get a chance to make up for his mistakes, but the entitlement train left the station when he decided to commit one of the most despicable crimes in nearly every culture.

My point is that he thought that. A mindset like that is probably more common than you think, unfortunately.

I don't really disagree with anything your saying and actually think college with those types of restricitions is a good idea...but how is he supposed to get a chance to make up for mistakes? It's a shame that the punishment for that sort of thing will never really fit the crime, considering the long term effects it could have, but I just don't see any good that comes from not letting the guy get on with his life too.

I certainly understand those who want to lock him up and throw away the key, I just don't think it's productive.

If NFL guys can come back after killing someone, why can't he return to playing high school ball?
