Dare I say I would rather keep Wilcox in the starring role instead of Church? When you have one of the heaviest hitting receivers of all time acknowledging you being a heavy hitter, it speaks in volumes. I think JJ is starting to build a pretty good reputation as a hitter and it will definitely play in the minds of receivers when they are going down the middle.

He's a great player. I think the Panthers miss him more than they know.

Maybe I'm missing something?

Carolina dumps Smith and the very next year Cam is MVP and the Panthers 15-1.

Meanwhile the Ravens passing offense is one of the league's most inefficient--29th in the league.

Smith himself statistically can't even crack the top 40 of wide receivers in the two best metrics.

Smith was a talented but Carolina totally made the right call in letting an aging, high maintenance, over-priced player hit the street.

Fellow players and coaches in Carolina didn't like the guy. Carolina said: good riddance. If you doubt it here is some info:

He's a little diva. Big mouthed has-been. I look forward to seeing him pounded into the ground on Sunday.

Yep and every time we played them I believe Newman did a very good job of shutting him down.

WRs and RBs watching film the last few weeks have to take note of Wilcox's ability to strike moving targets with some serious force. His angles appear to be better this season - still wish he would wrap-up more consistently.

Steve wanted to play for the boys after the panthers released him. He's one of those players you love him if he's on your team and hate him where ever else he plays. Kinda like T.O. or Prime

I've always loved him and he's never been a Cowboy.

Agreed. He's a gamer. Not many 5'9 receivers make it very long in this league. He's 37 and still playing. Still capable of being a 1,000 yard receiver if he needs to be. Had 670 in only 7 games last year. Not quite on pace for that this year but not far off.

I think it's awesome. People can call it Psychological but Wilcox has played better this year. I'm not saying he's great in coverage but it's nice to have a guy that will intimidate receivers. I'm the first one to admit that I couldn't believe that he made the team again this year. At least other players are seeing him hit and that's a good thing

I don't see Wilcox taking many bad angles this year, and as a result I'm seeing a lot of thunder from him.

Like that he gives us some nastiness back there.
It's funny that you mentioned this. Here's a difference that, I think, I've noticed with Wilcox this year. He's more patient. Wilcox used to want to blow everything thing up for a "wow" play. He wanted to stop the play behind the line or knock a guy out as the ball came in. It forced him to anticipate too much and jump the play early, IMHO. I think he's learned, just like a running back, that they aren't all home runs. He's trusting his teammates to do their jobs and it's affording him the opportunity to come in and "clean up". He's never going to be an Ed Reed. He doesn't have that kind of game smarts. But he's solid right now and hitting like Atwater. Compared to the previous incarnations of Wilcox, I'll take it.

You're not the only one, bro. He was in the "deadpool" by many observers all the way to the end of TC.

Steve Smith playing psychological games.

Giving JJ love so that he doesn't try to put Smith in a retirement home? I see you Steve.
Exactly! He seen the film. JJ is our D's ENFORCER! He's just trying to make nice-nice in hopes JJ doesn't lay the wood on him... won't help.

Bigger issue for Wilcox is understanding the depth he needs to get when playing zone. His instincts are average at best in coverage. When it comes to hitting, he has good instincts, but trying to anticipate the QB isn't his strongsuit.

Everybody really suprised JJ is playing good? IMO he was out of position. He doesn't have the above average coverage ability to play FS. His natural position is SS. Hes better playing closer to the LOS.

When they were collapsing in the Super Bowl last season Steve Smith was the veteran presence that they needed. Smith's impact is far greater than what's on the field. Its not his fault that the Ravens offense sucks. There are far more reasons than that.

There is a school of thought that Smith's personality and influence on his teammates was preventing Cam from becoming the team leader they wanted him to be.
