Still Think Carolina Not Thinking About Cam Newton?

Think again. Panthers coach Ron Rivera is expected to be there to eyeball QB Cam Newton -- and ostensibly DT Nick Fairley, though he's not thought to be in the mix for the top pick according to Darin Gantt of the Charlotte Observer. Rivera raised more than a few eyebrows with his effusive praise of Newton athe combine, comparing his size and strength to successful QBs such as Ben Roethlisberger, Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco.

Hoss, this could also be a bluff. They could very easily be propping Newton up because they want to trade out of the 1st overall pick ( and it's salary ) and got wind that Buffalo, indeed, is high on Newton, and not just from TV speculation. That would be a perfect scenario for them because they could still get either of the top 2 D-linemen, but don't have to pay either of them #1 overall pick money. They don't need to prop Newton up if they're going to pick him.

Now, when the reports start to come out that they're starting to engage in some serious talk with his agents, then that's where the fire will burn brighter. Right now it's probably just a smoke screen.

You don't take a project with the #1 overall pick. It'll be a blunder as big as the Jumongous Russell pick if they do it.

It's a sucky year to pick first. The good news is you need help just about everywhere. Trade down if you can, if not, get the best guy on the board and look to the second round. Don't reach and destroy your cap and waste the next three years trying to prove yourself justifying the huge contracts you're paying out.

Some times you don't have a choice based on who is in the draft.

When there is no consensus number 1, take the guy with the highest upside who will excite the fans the most.

IMO, that is Cam.

Not for Cam Newton. Shanny likes *REAL* QBs.

The excitement level of Cam is why I think Buffalo jumps at him. I can't imagine Ron Rivera is stupid enough to waste the #1 overall pick on Cam Newton as a QB.

Buffalo? They can't get **** right. Cam Newton will be another Buffalo mistake.

Nah. That high in the draft, you take the safest bet. The consequence for guessing wrong on a #1 QB is setting your program back 3-5 years. Upside for a top pick, in my opinion, is less important than getting a guy with lower downside. Elsewhere in the first round, you can be tempted by upside, but not up where the salaries are too-big-to-fail. This is playoff-football. You win by avoiding the bad plays, not by making the risky ones.

Fan excitement is fun, but it means very little in terms of sustaining a program since fans turn on players at the drop of a hat.

If I'm Carolina, I'm taking DL and moving on to my second rounder.

Third rounder. NE has their second.

Age, maturity and a little humbling probably went a long way toward Vick accepting the role he is playing now. I don't think anyone would want to draft Cam if they felt it was going to take years to develop him as an NFL type QB.

I personally don't think Cam is as much of a run first QB as Vick was coming out of college, so i don't think it will take as long to see what he can become.

Maybe put Cam in prison for two years then let him loose on the NFL.

I also find it interesting Mr. John Elway himself will be in attendance to watch Cam Newton.

Probably there to watch Fairley. ;)

I think Carolina could go Cam but given the weakness on the defensive front I would not be surprised if they went Fairley. What any team says right now can change on draft day.

I vote Hos to be the Panther's honorary GM for until after the draft. Let's wrap this Cam Newton thing up!
I think this is the greatest idea ever. Here are my plans for approval.

#1 Overall. Pick traded to Dallas for #9 overall and Terence Newman.

#65 pick. Pick traded to Dallas for #71 and Roy Williams.

#97 pick. Pick traded to Dallas for #109 and Marc Colombo.

#129 pick. Pick traded to Dallas for #140 and Marian Barber.

#161 pick. Pick traded to Dallas for #171 and Leonard Davis.

Dallas moves up a total of 47 draft slots and clears $45 million off the Salary cap.

I rule Madden.

Fail

Dallas trades Marc Colombo for the #1 overall pick straight up.
Dallas trades Barber for the #2 overall pick in the draft straight up.
Dallas trades Roy Williams for the #3 overall pick in the draft straight up.
Dallas trades BIGG for the #4 overall pick in the draft
Dallas trades Alex Barron for the #5 overall pick in the draft.
...
...
...
Dallas selects Robert Quinn with the #9 overall pick in the draft.

I win. ;)

Depending on the variables it could be even longer or shorter. In today's NFL, it's easier to recoup faster from such disasters IF the owner is willing to overlook losing 50 mills.

They don't have one, which is another reason why me thinks this is about propping Newton in order to trade out of the #1 overall. The Patriots own the Panther's 2nd round pick, but if Carolina can get a 2nd rounder from a top 5 team, I think they'd do the deal right now.

I'm in favor of putting Cam's Dad there anyway.

if I'm Buffalo, I wouldn't bite. I'd go Robert Quinn with the 3rd pick, and Colin Kaepernick in the 2nd round without blinking, but that's just me.

In reality, they've had attendance issues for years ( why they played in Toronto last year ) and Newton would make sense from the " butts in seats " angle.

That's a pretty dangerous game though. Even from a "butts in the seats" standpoint, if Cam doesn't pan out over the long run the pick could actually hurt them in that regard.
