The Cowboys are now close to four hours away before their first training camp practice and still have their top two draft picks unsigned, including first-rounder Anthony Spencer. Also, third-round pick James Marten remains unsigned as well.
In fact, none of the eight players have actually signed their contracts as of early Wednesday morning, but six have at least agreed to terms.
From the sound of things, it appears Spencer could be closer to signing a deal than Marten, who might have the most to lose of any of the draft picks if he misses at least one practice.
Both starting tackles Marc Colombo and Flozell Adams aren’t practicing today, and Colombo could be out at least a week, possibly more. That opens the door for two other young tackles to get an early jump on the competition. As it stands now, the Cowboys plan to work Pat McQuistan at right tackle and fourth-round pick Doug Free on the left side. If Marten signs, it appears he will compete with McQuistan on the right side.
To me, that speaks volumes what the Cowboys think of Free, who played guard and tackle in college at Northern Illinois. Owner Jerry Jones has even said the club might look at him at center. But for now, he’s on the left side – at least until Adams gets back.
This has been a slow start for the Cowboys in terms of signing their picks. They agreed to terms with fullback Deon Anderson over the weekend, before reaching deals with cornerback Alan Ball and Free on Tuesday morning. The Cowboys then agreed to terms with Isaiah Stanback, Nick Folk and Courtney Brown – who all share the same representation group – on Tuesday night, not long before they were introduced to the San Antonio crowd during the Cowboys Kickoff Party.
