BULGER IS A HOLDOUT

Lost in Thursday's frenzy of the Mike Vick case, the opening of more camps, and a flurry of first-round signings is the fact that Rams quarterback Marc Bulger did not report for a mandatory team meeting, and thus can be fairly labeled a holdout.

Bulger wants a new deal before his current contract expires. He is due to earn a base salary of $3.95 million in 2007.

Coach Scott Linehan expressed optimism that the situation will be resolved, and several players expressed their views about the importance of Bulger, a former West Virginia quarterback who was a sixth-round choice of the Saints -- and who has gradually (and quietly) developed into one of the best quarterbacks in the league.

Bulger is represented by Tom Condon, who currently is embroiled in a contract dispute with the Browns on behalf of rookie quarterback Brady Quinn.

The decision not to show up for camp, if it persists, would expose Bulger to fines of $14,000 per day and the possible obligation to pay back to the Rams a portion of the bonus money paid on the front end of the four-year, $19.1 million contract that Bulger signed in 2004.

BULGER IS IN CAMP

A reader tells us that Chris Draft recently said on Sirius NFL Radio that Rams quarterback Marc Bulger is in camp.

It's not clear whether this means that Bulger has a new deal.

Bulger missed a mandatory meeting on Thursday, in apparent protest of the fact that his below-market contract has not been extended as he enters its final year.

Bulger is arguably a top 5 QB in the league- only Manning and Brady are clearly better- and what he is being paid now is PEANUTS.

I agree. Probably the only concern with him compared to Brady and Manning is injury. Those other guys just don't miss games and Bulger has missed a few. He just gets hit a lot more than them. He was sacked 49 times last year and that was not in Mike Martz's offense where the QB is not protected. Probably the only sticking point I could see in not giving him a new, big contract.

Wasn't it Roy who knocked Warner out and started the Bulger era in STL?

Looking at his stats Bulger has been VERY consistent. He should still be a good QB for at least another 4-5 years. the Rams need to pull their head out and get it done. Its very hard ( as we KNOW all too well) to find a really good QB.

Yes, he broke his thumb. Warner has never been the same.

Roy knocked Warner to the ground hurting Warner's hand. He was 1 of 2 for 17 yards and 1 interception(by Gregg Ellis) when he went out of the game.

Jamie Martin came into the game to replace Warner. He went 24 of 37 for 262 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT. He got sacked late in the game that pushed back a FGA that was missed. Zimmer called for Roy to blitz. It was not part of their regular blizt package. He just told him to go for it. Roy coming in caused the O-line to miss an assignment allowing Gregg Ellis a clean path to sack Martin. Dallas then took the ball and Cundiff it a FG to win the game.

Martin started the following week against San Fran. I think he got hurt very late in that game. Bulger then became the starter the next few weeks. Martin started 3 of the final 4 games during that season.

He just was not the same to start that season. He played in 3 games prior to facing Dallas that year(2002). He threw 1 TD and 7 INTs. He got sacked a lot and fumbled a lot. He looked lost. I guess whatever demon deal he made expired after 3 years.
