Well it was nice to finally see some football again...and even though it was a meaningless pre-season game it was nice to cap it off with a victory as well!

Going into this game we had heard about many of our guys, especially the younger players and how they were doing in training camp...and tonight we finally got a chance to observe them in live action. Here is my assessment of who I thought did well, and who I thought had a disappointing night overall:

First, let me just say that I am going to intentionally leave off players like Romo, Austin, Ware, Bryant, etc...We already know they are awesome so there's really no point in debating them. Onto the list...

Stock Up:

Felix Jones - This guy could have been left off the list as well if not for him moving from our 2nd RB behind Barber to our new feature back. We already know he is extremely talented, but tonight was his first game in his new role, and man did he do well! Felix showed the speed and agility that so many of us loved about him when he was first drafted. He had a great game in his limited playing time and carries.

Stephen McGee - I still don't like that he holds on to the ball too long and sometimes seems to be too reluctant to take a shot downfield...but as the game progressed McGee seemed to improve dramatically. Perhaps he just needed to regain some confidence in his abilities. But right as I started complaining out loud while watching the game with my son, McGee turned it on and never looked back. 3 TD's and one INT that wasn't his fault. I think he made a very good case to be the 2nd string QB tonight...more on that later.

Tyron Smith - Went up against Von Miller in the first series...Romo never got sacked...job well done! There were a few close calls where it looked like he was beat, but he still managed to do very well tonight in the first quarter and kept Romo and Kitna protected.

Dwayne Harris - Stock WAAAY UP! 2 TD's tonight and a few more significant catches as well. I already knew he was a talented receiver, but he showed much more speed than I thought he was capable of on that long TD run. He's physical and fast...I loved it!

Phillip Tanner - He's been a bit overshadowed by Lonyae Miller in camp, but tonight he made the most of his opportunities. Neither he nor Lonyae got very much help from the 2nd & 3rd string O-Lines in making holes, but Tanner was able to create something out of nothing tonight, something Miller didn't do. This battle between Tanner and Miller is far from over, but the first round definitely goes to Tanner. (He does need to work on his pass protection though!)

Victor Butler - Showed the pass rushing skills we've all seen before and have been hearing about in this years camp as well. He was consistently getting pressure on the QB when he was in the game. I thought he did a very nice job tonight.

Raymond Radway - Currently in the hunt for the 5th receiver spot probably competing most with Jesse Holley...Tonight Radway gets the nod. I'm not sure if it was Holley or Ogletree that caused that one interception (conflicting opinions) so I won't count that against Holley, but even without that Radway clearly had the better game both on STs and as a receiver with a TD.

John Phillips - our third TE is a stud...Marty B better get going or he may move down the depth chart.

Chris Gronkowski - He did very well with the first team tonight...I thought he was clearly better and more noticeable than Chapas even in much less playing time.

David Arkin - Our new left guard played very well in my opinion...I didn't hardly notice him unless I looked for him, and that's a good thing.

Tysson Poots - He only had that one memorable catch, but it was a beaut! A few more like that and he may make our practice squad.

Stock Down:

Lonyae Miller - I was really excited about watching him play tonight...boy was that a disappointment. To be fair, the O-Line gave him nothing to work with. But still, Tanner was able to make something out of nothing by fighting for his yardage, something I didn't see from Lonyae tonight. There's still three more games to play though so don't count Lonyae out just yet.

Jon Kitna - He didn't look good tonight. I don't know if it is simply his age or what, but he just didn't have "it". He was pretty good last season when Romo was out, but tonight he didn't look like the same guy. McGee might be edging him out for the 2nd spot, especially if they both continue to play the way they did.

Gerald Sensabaugh - Man, that one play in the first quarter reminded me too much of last season...I'm not going to worry yet though, he's barely been practicing these new defensive schemes for a week...But I hope he improves in the coming games.

Sam Young - I saw him get beat even against 2nd and third stringers...Not good. I was hoping for much better from this guy after hearing so many god things about him.

Sean Lee - Not as great of a game as I was hoping for...That missed tackle in the backfield was kind of disappointing...Wrap up Lee! I still really like him though and think he'll be a very good player for us now and in the future. The only reason I am putting him on "Stock Down" is because I'm running out of people!

Our secondary as a whole didn't look very good but I expected this with all the new schemes and injuries...I think we'll get much better in the coming weeks, especially when our players get healthy.

Well, that's what I noticed tonight...who caught your eye? Please add your opinions!

Sweet write up, man. Very enjoyable. I like the simplicity of stock up and stock down.

Victor Butler played very well tonight. I was really happy about McGee. He is a keeper.

I find no issue, other than including Sean Lee on the down side of the ledger. He'll be a force all season.

I missed the second half while putting in a new radiator on the truck, so I can't speak to anything that happened in the second half.

I agree. Lee missed that one tackle in the backfield but he was firing up in the hole with reckless abandon. I really liked his aggressiveness and speed of play.

I'd also add Barry Church to stock down.

I'd let Alan Ball on the stock up list because he looked much better at CB than he did at Safety last year.

Maybe Rucker on the stock up list as he looked good as a receiving TE but I can't see him making the team unless Bennett is traded.

Igor stock down.

Lissemore stock up.

As a developmental prospect, I really like what I saw from Jeremy Pernell at OT. He's playing against 2nd-3rd teamers himself, but he handled himself very well IMO.

Love to see us have another year of development with that kid.

If we're really objective about this, should Radway's stock have risen? Sure, he caught that TD, but he also ran some of the worst routes ever run in a Cowboys uniform, leading to multiple incompletions.

I'm not saying he doesn't have potential - dude can get separation - but he did more harm than good on the offensive side of the ball.

Radway is trainable. He's not a bloke...but does possess useable NFL quality speed. He should be able to learn intensity, commitment to football technique, and possesses an ability to catch the ball. He needs further work with the present Receiver's Coach. But I see him earning his keep, and this season.

Though, not as tall, Radway reminds me favorably of Malcolm Floyd. I like the idea of Jimmy Robinson having a few seasons to work with this kid.

That's all terrific, and I don't disagree. But it also doesn't have to do with his performance yesterday, which was not good.

I would have to say Hatcher stock up as well. He looked good out there tonight. Bye bye Bowen.

I was watching and thinking Kitna is "there". By there I mean it seems when some QB's reach a certain age, all of the sudden it just goes, and it looks gone. McGee has shown more than enough to be groomed for the #2 spot. Give him the reps and keep Kitna for a emergency guy.

I don't think Kitna played long enough to draw a conclusion. If McGee had played as little as Kitna, you would have put him in the stock down category based on his early play.

Arkin got no push and got pushed back a couple of times; he will need to get stronger. Everything else he has; tenacity and good technique and willing to scrap and claw. But to start him this season means we will have to worry about both guards getting bull rushed.

Oh yeah...That was a big one I missed. Definitely agree!

I won't argue there...good point. McGee started off very shaky as well, but once he got himself into a groove he was pretty darn good...Kitna never got that opportunity.

I haven't commented on Dwayne Harris yet because I want to give myself 24 hours from game time to allow my emotions to cool.

I would have him in Canton if I spoke now! Pretty sure I said man he looks like Wes Welker at some point last night..... so yea I AM ON A CHILL OUT PERIOD.
lol
