The defense has been given enough ammo that at this point the Cowboys defense should be a top 10 unit barring significant injuries early on (Sean Lee- cough). I don't want to hear any excuses about not spending draft assets on this defense.

I also do not want to hear any ******** about having a hole at safety or 1Tech as an excuse for a bad defense. The team has voluntarily chosen to avoid spending money at those two positions and avoiding taking one in the draft.

The team has put its money and resources where it wants them on defense. It's time for this defense to stop being a liability to the team and win a few games for the team defensively.

I agree. We have played the bend but don't break and to an extent it has worked but not against top offense. We have watched guys like Rodgers kill us on big 3rd down plays in the last seconds. This defense needs to be able to attack and make the big turnover and big stops if we are to advance as a team.

Alrighty then......

Well, the defense was technically eighth in the NFL last season based on the metric most often used (total yardage). That's top-10.

But that is the issue right there

Agreed.

The FO and Coaches still did not address most of the main issues (DT & Safety positions).

The defense falls apart when Lee is not playing. He is a year older now but the FO addressed the issue by drafting a LB. However that is a lot to ask for a rookie.

Clearly there is a DT out there that the FO don't want which is truly asinine. I don't care about the price.

Signing Hankins will make things easier on the defense and especially for our LBs (Lee, Smith & Vander Esch).

Plus it will make teams one dimensional where they have to pass which only will help Lawrence, Ealy, Irving, Taco and Collins out.

True but Dallas ranked towards the bottom on 3rd down percentage, we still rank towards the bottom on ints. I think there is some good things this defense has done but they need to get more turnover and set the offense up in better field position. I agree that offense had issues last season but there are some big areas this defense needs to improve on

I'm not going to say they can't improve, particularly in the areas you noted. Just pointing out that we had a top 10 defense in 2017. Our defense was pretty good. Much better than recent years. And showing improvement as the season progressed. Not a stretch to expect that to continue with natural maturation from key, young players and a couple more key additions.

We did not have a top 10 offense. If anything, that's getting a pass around here.

when one player on defense goes out and they just collapse then there are big problems this team has to be able to get to the point that if a couple players go out they can still function until that happens they are just a middling team

what it doesn't have is someone like dave wannstedt or mike zimmer as its coordinator. marinelli, for all his profanities and scowl on his face just isn't that good of a dc imo. apparently the fo agrees as they were willing to promote eberflus to the role if he would stay and put marinelli out to pasture like they did with monty. I look for kris Richard to have considerable input this year and next year possibly be the new dc.

Our offense when they can control the clock gives so much more relief to our offense.

It’d be more accurate to say “stop giving the team a pass for the neglect and the long shots on defense.” But we don’t do that around here for whatever boggling reason. The solution seems to be to let it remain bad or mediocre and to call even better, or st least more surprising, plays. Because if we lap the rest of the NFL on offense, it averages out or something.

Anti-GROZ is here, finally. Who’s with me?

It’s amazing how much he learned immediately after he left, right?

I'm not that big on NFL yardage stat. I just know that I have watched this until in big situation like GB and Rodgers give up 30 yards on a 3rd and 20 that cost us. That is just one instance. Dallas pretty much has been a bend but don't break.
As for handing out blame? I think offense and defense go hand in hand and I put some blame on both

Who's giving them a pass? I think we all know they've been stinking up the joint for a while now...

The eyeball test says we weren't top ten last year. So I agree with what you are saying.

I'll never forget 2013. Arguably the worst Cowboys defense in team history, yet Romo still managed to win 8 games. When the team did lose, like 51-48 to Denver, Romo got the heat for it. Even last year we had people saying average defense is good enough. No, it's not.

The Cowboys have never won anything with an average defense. You don't have to be the '85 Bears but you can't be one of the worst third down defensive teams in the league, either.

True. But many have been saying the defense isn't that great BECAUSE we won't address it with players. That narrative is incorrect.
