After 24 hours of soul-searching and a conversation with general manager Jerry Reese, seven-time Pro Bowl defensive end Michael Strahan has decided to end his holdout and report to the New York Giants.

Strahan had been training in Los Angeles for weeks but had not decided whether to continue his career with the Giants until late Friday afternoon.

Strahan, who missed 36 days of training camp -- at a fine of $14,000 a day -- owes the team $504,000. It is not exactly known how Strahan resolved the monetary issue, but he and the Giants reached a settlement that allowed him to return.

Early in the week, it appeared retirement was more of an option, and Strahan had hoped to make a decision by Monday. Reese described the talks with Strahan as "constructive and positive."

During his holdout, Strahan had met with ownership and talked to teammates and friends. He has one week to prepare for the regular season opener Sept. 9 at Dallas.

Speaking to reporters at camp on Friday, Giants coach Tom Coughlin maintained the approach that Strahan was not going to play.

"I have to, I have to," Coughlin said. "That's been the way, not by choice, by necessity. Again, we'll work with the guys that are here."

Strahan is scheduled to make $4 million this season. His 132½ sacks are tops among active players. He set an NFL single-season record with 22½ sacks in 2001.

Senior writer John Clayton covers the NFL for ESPN.com. Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Five hundred grand to not attend training camp! Another example of someone very rich doing something very stupid...

I hate that this is his record. If only the NFL had started keeping the record a year earlier.

I don't know -- if I'm Strahan, I pretty much know how to get myself ready to play and understand that if I can miss a TC or two, I might extend my career a bit.

Very true...

And as much as I wonder why these rich players can afford 5 hundred grand, I'm liking how some of these older good players take it easy...

They already know how to play! Why beat them?

I hope that is what is happening with the Cowboys...

If that 500k is the difference between another year in the league or ending early then he's made a good choice.

Don't you mean 4 years earlier?

Harvey Martin had 23 in 1978.

Ahh, BIG E was one of the BEST RT to ever play for the BOYZ. We haven't had one since he left...

He was the man, unfortunately after the accident he turned into "Hands to the face, #79 offense"

You're right, he wasn't the same after his accident but he was damn good. I watched interviews with the great late Reggie White and he said that BIG E was the toughest RT that he went against and Strahan said the same thing. We haven't had a RT with half his heart, desire, aggressiveness, or nasty attitude since he left. He would beat you to the ground then step all over you. He was awesome!!!
