Straight from the shot glass
In July Hall of Fame running back Marcus Allen told me that he wasn't ready to put Jay Cutler in his "Fave Five" of young NFL quarterbacks.
"Cutler's got to be a little more consistent before we anoint him," Allen said.
So go ahead, Fantasy Football owner. Pass on Cutler in the draft. Then look back on it a few months from now and see if you made a smart move.
Cutler's numbers last season were pretty solid for a second-year NFL player -- 3,497 yards passing, 20 touchdowns and a 63.6 completion percentage with 14 interceptions in 467 attempts.
Prediction: Cutler will become the first quarterback in Broncos history to throw 30 or more touchdowns in a regular season . . .
The best linebacker I saw on the field Saturday night at Invesco Field at Mile High? Marion Barber. Yeah, I know he's a running back for the Dallas Cowboys, but Barber initiated more contact on tackles than any one else on the field . . .
Watch David Oliver run the 110-meter hurdles tonight in the Olympics, and take a few seconds to remember another Denver East High alum -- the late Jerome Biffle. Biffle won a gold medal for the long jump at the 1952 Olympics held in Helsinki, Finland . . .
No, you did not just say the Broncos should sign free agent running back Shaun Alexander . . .
The Broncos aren't expected to have wide receiver Brandon Marshall in the lineup (suspension) when the San Diego Chargers visit on Sept. 14. The Chargers are hoping four-time Pro Bowl selection Antonio Gates will be ready. Gates still is on the team's Physically Unable to Perform list with a toe injury . . .
A quote from Green Bay Packers wide receiver Donald Driver, to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel: "We're not scaring anyone and we feel like we have an offense that should scare anybody. We know that we have some of the best running backs and receivers in the game and tight ends." No mention of quarterback in Driver's assessment.
