One of the reasons that even I get irritated with my cynical side is that I do not want to sound one iota like the Captain of Curmudgeonry, Randy Galloway.
For those not from the DFW area, Galloway is a longtime beat writer/columnist/radio personality that is advancing in age and fits the "country" image of the area quite perfectly. He's overly negative - as opposed to objectively realistic - and his reasoning is too often patterned by his semi-retired state and not in really wanting to get the heart of matters anymore.
Reasoned criticism is one thing. Throwing stones for the sake of picking up rocks is quite another.
So it came as a pleasant surprise when I heard him gushing about the Cowboys training camp. Gushing, I tell you. I almost had to pull over.
Galloway said this is the most physical camp he's seen in Dallas in many years. He also said Jason Garrett is really hitting his stride, becoming much looser with his personality, as he's putting a very palpable stamp on the team. "Camp Cupcake", Galloway said, "is gone."
He went on to say how crisp and purposeful the camp is and how much more work is getting done in the allotted times compared to before. The organization and culture change is very noticeable.
And while Garrett is not a screamer, Galloway went on, he has the same demanding expectations of players that Jimmy and Parcells had.
Another point I liked along these lines - this one from Babe Laufenberg - is that Garrett has known Jerry Jones for 20 years now, and he knows what he's about. He knows how to work around Jerry's side-circus ways and get things done. Garrett and Jerry are opposites in that Garrett is without ego, but has a lot of pride, whereas Jerry is a lot more about ego than pride.
All in all, I feel really good about our coaching situation because I think we have that rare bird that will stay here for years to come and build success despite the trade-offs that go with being here.
And if Randy Galloway thinks so, there must be something to it. It had to hurt Randy just to say it.
