Why do people make blanket statements like this? Are you claiming geography isn't taught anymore? State capitals etc? Certainly not true. My 6th grade daughter could answer all those questions and she attends public school.

Could you find some kids "back when we taught basics" who would look equally foolish answering some of these questions. My hunch is absolutely. I can give you the list of them from my class of 1977.

Not trying to start a big debate. Just trying to keep it real.

do some checking around; you will find a whole lot of school systems where American History or Geography, things like that, are now 'electives'. Even in Jr High. In elementary it really depends on the school system. How 'progressive' they are. I think you would be shocked by what you found.
