Stuff I learned today

For Reference:

The Delhi, India government has launched a major campaign to combat air pollution by banning refueling of old vehicles. Diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years are no longer allowed to refuel at petrol stations. This directive from the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) follows a 2018 Supreme Court ruling. The ban is being enforced through CCTV cameras and speakers at petrol pumps, alerting authorities about end-of-life vehicles. The move affects an estimated 60 lakh old vehicles in Delhi. While some citizens welcome the initiative as a step towards reducing pollution, others, especially from lower income groups, express concerns about its impact on personal mobility. The ban will be extended to five NCR districts from November 1st. Experts suggest that even well-maintained old vehicles cannot meet current emission norms.

One would think it would be better to have emissions tests rather than base it on age because a well-maintained old vehicle might pollute less than a crappily maintained "newer" vehicle missing parts.

In speaking to a Glacier National Park ranger, i learned that, outside of Alaska, the area running from NW MT through Alberta and British Columbia has the highest density of grizzly bears in North America. Cool!

I also learned that bear spray is far more reliable as a bear deterrent than a hand gun or rifle. If fact, there has not been a recorded human fatality when bear spray was used.

Apparently, there have been numerous deaths when a hand gun was used as a deterrent. The explanation that most people carry a 9mm (which is fairly "light" ammo) and most are understandably scared $hitless when confronted with a bear and typically shot wildly.

I guess if I was carrying a 9mm and confronted a full grown aggressive grizzly, I would probably shoot wildly too! LOL. It seems like such a small round for such a large animal. But since he can run faster than me, climb better than I can, and kick my but with one swipe of his massive paws, I would figure my 9mm is my best chance. Maybe I get in a lucky shot to a sensitive area.

But guns make really loud noises. I am surprised a bear would not find it a little scary.

When I lived in Calgary, hiked throughout the Canadian Rockies. Trails that routinely crossed known bear paths carried a warning, "Not suitable for 6 or less hikers in a single group". Apparently, there hadn't been a grizzly attack when there was more than 6 hikers.

Imagine asking friends or visitors to join your hike so grizzlies wouldn't attack you.

"No, that's alright...but good luck!!!"

I still need to make it up to Glacier National Park. I live about 9 hours away and have never been. Closest I’ve gotten was Kalispell, but I was there for work and didn’t have the time to explore.

I also really want to check out the Banff area up in Alberta. Calgary and Edmonton seem cool too....for more of the urban adventure side of things.

There were no dinosaurs in Florida. Because the Florida peninsula was underwater during dinosaur time.

It reminds me of the old joke about two guys confronted by a bear and the one guy asks, can we outrun the bear? The other guy replies, I just have to outrun you. With 6 guys, chances are better I guess.

That isn’t true, the peninsula was about 1000 miles from any body of water, there was no gulf and the Atlantic was a long, long ways away.

Not sure about dinosaurs but plenty of fossils of land animals.
https://www.youtube.com/@PaleoCris
Just one youtube channels where they find many fossils in florida creeks/rivers. There are other channels as well.
Sure many are more known for finding plenty of Megalodon teeth.
However he has found many mastadon teeth as well as fossils of other land animals.

People don't get just how long dinosaurs were around. It covered the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods. Yes, Florida was underwater for some of that time, but there's was tens of millions of years where it wasn't. We're talking a time scale of around 186 or so million years.

Yea, Florida was underwater towards the end before the asteroid. Florida was landlocked when the dinosaurs started for probably a hundred million years or so. Pangea started to separate. Here is a cool lind to input time periods and what the land looked like.

Onn is a kind of generic product you see sold at walmart.
Although most of those products are not very good but just a cheap alternative.

https://www.walmart.com/ip/onn-Goog...Hands-Free-Voice-Control-Smart-Hub/5193222892

This product has been very good IMO.

Cheaper than the Official Google version. Cheaper than the Apple box or invidia.

Roku is a good box unless you want to side load apps.

Word is the fire stick or amazon is wanting to develop it's own OS and moving away from android.

So The onn box runs Google TV software. Has enough memory and storage space. Lets you load side apps...what some call jail breaking.

For the price it is hard to beat. I have had mine since December and have had not issues with it. I like that I can even use side apps to personalize the appearance of it. I can use other apps for various things.

I also like the idea that it has a button on the small box you can push and it will cause your remote to beep. Comes in hand when you are not finding your remote.

Dude, for that price I might have to pick one up just to test it out.
