2014 Cowboys Draft Weekly Notebook - Episode 5 - Safeties
We continue our weekly series of player evaluations for the 2014 draft with a strong batch of safeties. Last week, we grabbed defensive tackles and worked our way through 6 who have a chance to be Top 50 picks, and now we want to look at 7 different safeties who all are regarded as strong prospects in the right situation or scenario.

Like I said, we want to make sure we hit the 6 most obvious positions that may be addressed by the Cowboys in the Top 100 picks (1st, 2nd, and 3rd Round) which are: DT, DE, S, OT, OG-OC, and QB. When we wrap those 6 spots up, we will do our best to clean up the scraps, consider some other spots, and then perhaps build some sort of board of preference.

I really don't want to reference other people's work, but rather just watch a ton of football and trust the eyeballs. It certainly doesn't account for character details - whether the guy is a fantastic human or a hardened criminal - nor does it offer the intimate details of a medical exam that should all be considered, but it does break down at least 3-4 games of his college work to really "know the player" and what kind of guy he is at the college level.

=====

Safety is a spot that is fantastically important on the NFL stage and as the passing game is becoming more and more center stage, and as the most important component of the passing game is isolating defenders in bad match ups in space, it is now imperative that safety is not ignored by a team.

Of course, you cheer for the Dallas Cowboys, and if any team has spent a nearly a decade undervaluing and under-prioritizing the safety position as a whole, it is this team.

I don't know how much we undervalue and underprioritize things vs how much we can sink in one spot on the team. We all need to switch to the play them early while they are cheap then be very careful how much you resign them for if at all.

Boy, he really likes Pryor.

If you ask me if our safety play would improve with a better pass rush I would say yes. Would a better pass rush help our group of safety's a lot...I'm not so sure. Heath and Wilcox would have to show marked improvement to convince me they are NFL quality starting players even if Charles Haley and Bob Lily were rushing the passer.

He sounds like he is drooling over Joyner as well. I just love how he plays. Would love to have him on the team since he hits, plays football like it should be played and has position flexibility to slot corner. Who cares if he is short.

I think Joyner's one of the top 15-20 players in this draft. It's the size that has him a round lower.

If he busts out a 4.3 this weekend, people will suddenly start talking about him in the first round. Same thing goes if he measures a little taller than listed.

Agree but... I think Tyrann Mathieu turned a lot of heads in Arizona and he's even smaller than Joyner. If you have ball instincts, speed and can hit, size is mitigated further away from the line of scrimmage.

The question remains if safety is the best available player at 16 or 17 do we take him, or do we still go defensive line.

Our S situation just drives me bats.

I'm on board with Pryor. I could live with Dix.

And I don't care what kind of player he is, I'm staying away from a 5'8" S entirely in the first round.

He is probably more of the trade down target with how we view "measureables". I would not care. If he was worth that on my board, I take him and do not even think about it.

Yep, in those games against players like Megatron, Brandon Marshall, etc.., I was thinking to myself, "if only the Cowboys had a 5'8 Safety"...

Happy for you.

I was just thinking I was just thinking I would like someone better than Jeff Heath and Jakar Hamilton.

It is this kind of measurement based thinking that gets us Matt Johnson. Hey, he's tall enough. Can't play or stay healthy, but at least we can hope.

Alexander are these your words or from the article?

Either way, this has pretty much been my mantra for about 8 years.

McClay keeps talking about "specialists" and I would think Joyner falls in that category.

That was Sturm saying it in the article. He went on to list the safety combinations the team has had since Woodsen/Williams and it's pretty brutal. Patrick Watkins? He also talks about how important the position has become since offenses key on creating mismatches with route running and tight ends.

I was blown away by the safety play of Seattle, maybe it's becasue I'm so used to seeing ours play. There is never any room and when they hit they make you remember it.

What's his short shuttle time?

How about the three cone drill?

These are the important questions.

In those games you may want to use your 5'8" safety to man cover someone else with out help so you have a legit double on Megatron.

Calvin has 6 catches for 116 yards and 2 TDs versus the caridnals this year but the Lions scored a total of 21 points and lost.

So--you are saying that despite the tiny short player in the back seven like Mathieu, Calvin Johnson did not just rape the Cardinals?
