Bob Sturm: Why Cowboys made a good bargain move stealing a run-stopper from the Eagles

By Bob Sturm, Special contributor

It is nice to know that free agency week is not just about teases and rumors. Sometimes, you actually add a nice piece to your team and yesterday the Cowboys did just that. Cedric Thornton has been signed for what appears to be roughly a four-year, $17 million deal. The deal includes $5M up front in a signing bonus and then base salaries of $1M, $3M, $4M, and $4M -- with the first two years ($9M fully guaranteed). The final two years will basically be team options with only the remainder of his signing bonus ($1.25M per year) as potential dead money.

Cedric is going to turn 28-years-old in June and is 6-foot-4 and around 310 pounds. He has been an Eagles force in the middle for the past four seasons out of Southern Arkansas. He is a run stopper who will play around 600 snaps as a run-down speed bump 1-technique. But, he is actually much more than that.

Nick Hayden has played this 1-technique spot for the past three seasons and has performed admirably for a player who wasn't even in the league when the Cowboys called. But, Thornton has a much bigger and impressive toolbox. He plays all first and second downs and has a knack for destroying outside zone blocking plays. Now you may be wondering how this helps the pass rush - well, it really doesn't. In nickel or passing downs, he is generally on the sideline. He will occasionally get to the QB, but odds are you have better natural pass rushers than him.

The price is what makes this right for me. The Giants just paid Damon Harrison $46 million with $24 million guaranteed to do a similar job in New York. The Giants, I guess, plan on playing Harrison and Johnathan Hankins both inside on their line which will not allow much on the ground but will certainly not get to the QB, either. Either way, Harrison for almost $10 million a year or Thornton for $4 million? There is no question if you are going to pay for a two-down-run-stopper, you want one but you also don't want to give them all the money. I can't imagine the Giants are going to like that deal in 24 months.

Cedric Thornton - No. 72 - 6'4, 309 - 27-years-old

@Sturm1310 , is it possible that Dallas can solve their terrible run defense in one offseason if they draft a defensive end high (you know of whom I speak)?

I smell a Super Bowl. . . .

But seriously, ladies and germs, with 4 career sacks in four years, good thing we plan to use him as a run stuffer and not a QB destroying machine. Not what i call a major upgrade, blokes, but action is better than inaction and mediocre players are better than what we largely have now.
So, who knows? Sir Jerry might be on to something. What that is ain't exactly clear. There's a man with a phone over there, telling me, we've got to beware.
Bollocks!

This was a quality signing. I spoke with my die hard Eagles friend and he said he hates to lose him. Was great against the run.

One of the big perks for me with this signing is that its bye bye Nick Hayden. Add Bosa to the mix and we could have a solid line next season at least. Put me in for the QB at 4, but I dont see Jones doing that.

I don't think that you understand why they signed this guy. He's not a pass rush specialist and they know that. He will help open up the pass rush though and he will definitely help the run D, which is exactly why they signed him. He's a solid player. Good signing by our FO. Finally something to get a little excited about.....

You don't even want to understand the signing, do you?

These negative posts for the sake of being negative are getting old

There's nothing that anyone can complain about at all with this signing. The Cowboys signed a relatively young player at a position of need to a cap friendly contract. Thornton is very strong at the POA, can hold up against double teams, and even split them from time to time to make stops. The clips above show a good motor. What's not to like?

Yes, he isn't a pass rusher, but he fills a real need and role on this DL. He's replacing a guy who is neither a pass rusher nor a run stopper.

Thornton was top 5 against the run last year. People talk about lack of pass rush ... We were killed by lack of interior rush and guys sustaining blocks and not getting pushed back. Great signing.

Your pass rush is only solid if the QB cannot step into the pocket every time

I sent him a congratulatory text telling him playing for the Cowboys is a whole different deal.

He probably got a thousand messages like that but he sent me a like back.

Right now, I think Bosa is who Dallas hopes is there at No. 4. We'll know for sure if they go after a bona fide starting DE. That doesn't seem to be the plan especially with Hardy being the last true difference maker available.

I think we'll add someone like Chris Long to be a rotational play, but that's it.

I would agree that this is what the brass is most likely thinking.

As they should. We're building our team from the inside out again, finally. I don't even care if Bosa doesn't live up to the number 4 pick, I'll take a solid to very good player at DE over a better player at most other positions.

Was great seeing the gifs of him not getting pushed back like Hayden routinely did, people are so obsessed with pass rushers they forget all about run stoppers. Hopefully his signing means we won't see teams kill us on crucial 3rd & shorts in the 4th quarter anymore.

That is a bit condescening, old fellow. Of course they signed him as a run stuffer and not as a QB destroying machine, as previously written.
I, too, anticipate being excited by this athlete.
